Fire of a gasoline tanker on the Hanoi - Hai Phong highway, one person did not survive

While traveling on the Hanoi - Hai Phong highway, a gasoline tanker truck crashed into a truck stopped in front, causing the fire to flare up violently. The fire broke out very strongly, rising tens of meters high, spreading to the outside of the highway guardrail.

At about 9 p.m. last night (2/7) on the Hanoi-Hai Phong highway, the section near the Thong Nhat overpass, in Gia Loc town (Hai Duong province), a large fire suddenly occurred of a gasoline tanker truck. Immediately afterwards, the incident was reported to the authorities.

Initial information from the authorities is that before the incident, the tank truck BKS 24R - 011.xx was circulating on the Hanoi-Hai Phong highway. When going to Km50 600, in Gia Loc district (Hai Duong), the petrol tanker had an accident, colliding with a truck with a control plate 14C - 200.xx. The collision between the 2 vehicles caused the tank truck to overturn, creating a loud explosion and immediately the fire broke out violently.

Witness Nguyen Ngoc Tu driving on the next road said that the fire broke out very strongly, covering the entire lane from Hai Phong to Hanoi, spreading to the trees next to it. "I didn't see the person on the tank truck getting out in time," Mr. Tu said, adding that standing about 50 meters away, he still felt the heat.

At 9:40 p.m., the fire truck arrived at the scene, after about 45 minutes of extinguishing the fire. Next to the highway guardrail, the police found a charred body, suspected to be the truck driver V.V.T., 45 years old, residing in Dien Bien province.

The tank truck driver D.P.T., 41 years old, residing in Lao Cai province, was taken to Hai Duong Provincial General Hospital, then transferred to Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi. Through the initial examination, Mr. T. suffered a brain injury and fractured right rib.

At the scene, the small truck turned in the opposite direction of movement, the rear wheel axle broke apart. The authorities determined that this car was not carrying goods, was parked on the road due to an incident, and had a warning with a tree branch. The gasoline tank truck overturned, burned down, blocking the entire lane towards Hanoi. The guard strip and sign at the place where the accident occurred were damaged.

The Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department (Hai Duong Provincial Police) dispatched 4 fire trucks, firefighting robots and 30 officers and soldiers to the scene to extinguish the fire. The Gia Loc district police sent forces to support firefighting, protect the scene and ensure traffic safety.

"We arrived at the scene and had to stand quite far away to prevent the car from exploding," said a representative of the Hanoi - Hai Phong expressway operator.

The fire spread to the green corridor on the side of the expressway; causing local congestion on the Hanoi-Hai Phong expressway. By 3:37 a.m. on July 3, traffic on the Hanoi - Hai Phong highway at the section where the accident occurred was smooth again.

At the time of the incident, the road surface was dry, the signs, guardrails were complete and normal, and the weather was not raining.

105km long, the Hanoi - Hai Phong expressway passes through Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hai Duong and Hai Phong. The road surface is from 32.5 to 35m wide with 6 lanes running, 2 lanes for emergency stops. Vehicles are allowed to run a maximum of 120 km/h, a minimum of 60 km/h.

Previously, at the beginning of 2024, a similar tank truck fire also occurred on the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong highway. Accordingly, at about 2 p.m. on February 15, the male driver of a tank truck with Tien Giang license plate ran on the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong highway, heading west. When arriving at Loi Binh Nhon commune, Tan An city, the rear of the car generated smoke and fire.

The driver actively drove the tank truck down the highway towards National Highway 62, used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire, but failed. Some people nearby called the fire police.

Many soldiers and fire trucks arrived at the scene, extinguishing the fire. The fire severely damaged the tank truck, and the driver suffered minor burns on his face and hands. The highway passes through the congested area for nearly 10 km. Police must be on duty at the end of the road to regulate vehicles.
