The Ministry of Health has provided information on the Covid-19 epidemic situation after many Asian countries recorded the return of nCoV. Although there has not been a concentrated outbreak, the Ministry warned that the number of infections may continue to increase in the coming time due to the large number of exchanges and travel during the holidays.
Meanwhile, since the beginning of the year, Vietnam has recorded 148 cases scattered across 27 provinces and cities, with no deaths. Ho Chi Minh City detected 34 cases, followed by Hai Phong 21, Hanoi 19, Nghe An 17, Bac Ninh 14, Quang Ninh 6, Bac Giang and Binh Duong each with 4 cases. In addition, 19 other localities recorded 1 to 2 cases per province. So far, no concentrated outbreaks have been recorded, but there has been a slight increase in the past 3 weeks, with an average of 20 cases per week.
Globally, the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths continues to decline. In the 28 days to April 27, the world recorded more than 25,400 new cases, down nearly 57%; the number of deaths also decreased by nearly 38% compared to the previous period. Brazil currently has the highest number of cases, followed by the UK.
In Asia, Thailand reported more than 53,600 cases and 16 deaths from the beginning of the year to May 10, of which Bangkok recorded more than 16,700 cases. Notably, the number of cases in Thailand increased sharply after the traditional New Year, most likely related to large gatherings and the appearance of the XBB.1.16 sub-variant. However, most cases only have mild symptoms, and the Thai Ministry of Health recommends that people should not be too worried.
In the recent week from May 4 to 10, the number of new cases detected decreased to 12,453. The increase in COVID-19 cases in Thailand is related to the increase of the XBB.1.16 sub-variant.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.16 has emerged since 2023, is capable of spreading rapidly but there is no evidence of causing more severe symptoms and there is currently no new warning for COVID-19 globally.
The number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore also increased, from 11,100 last week to 14,200 in the week from April 27 to May 3. The number of people requiring intensive care decreased from 3 to 2, and the number of people hospitalized increased from 102 to 133. The Ministry of Health and the Infectious Diseases Authority of Singapore said that this is a cyclical situation, similar to other respiratory diseases. The two main circulating variants are LF.7 and NB.1.8, both descendants of JN.1 - for which vaccines are available.
"It is important that our health system can manage the surge in cases," Health Minister Ong Ye Kung stressed.
In Vietnam, COVID-19 is a common disease. With the high level of interaction and travel of Vietnamese people during the April 30 and May 1 holidays, it is possible that there will be an increase in cases in our country in the coming time; however, there may not be an increase in severe cases due to variants of the COVID-19 virus.
In the face of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Ministry of Health has proactively strengthened supervision, closely monitored the COVID-19 situation, and strengthened the implementation of epidemic prevention and control measures at medical facilities and in the community. Ready to admit, provide emergency care, and effectively treat cases of the disease, especially high-risk groups (pregnant women, people with underlying diseases, the elderly, etc.), preventing deaths.
Since the pandemic broke out in 2020, Vietnam has recorded more than 11.6 million cases, ranking 13th out of 231 countries and territories. More than 43,000 people have died from the disease, accounting for 0.4% of total infections. In October 2023, the Government classified Covid-19 as a group B infectious disease instead of group A as before, meaning it was reduced in severity and considered a common disease like the flu.
To proactively prevent the epidemic, authorities recommend that people continue to wear masks in public places, on means of transport, and at medical facilities; limit unnecessary gatherings; regularly wash hands with soap or disinfectant solution; focus on increasing physical activity, training, and maintaining proper nutrition.
People with symptoms of fever, cough, and difficulty breathing should go to the nearest medical facility for timely examination and monitoring. Those returning from epidemic areas should also proactively monitor their health to protect themselves, their families, and the community.
