Regarding the case of a mother being doused with gasoline and set on fire by her son in Tra Vinh, which has caused public outrage, Dr. Pham Phuoc Tien, Deputy Head of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Department, Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC), said that the patient is still receiving active treatment.
Specifically, on February 27, after examination, doctors determined that patient NTPL (45 years old) had 46% 2nd-3rd degree burns on his body, with 30% deep burns. The patient received burn resuscitation, intravenous fluids, electrolytes, pain relief, antibiotics, wound care, and nutritional support. It is expected that the patient will undergo multiple skin grafts and debridement surgeries, with the treatment period possibly lasting more than 1 month, and the prognosis is cautious.
On the hospital bed, Mrs. L.'s entire body was almost completely bandaged, with many black burns on her head and face. Although the victim was conscious and able to communicate, she had difficulty speaking, while her spirit was still broken.
Speaking in a whisper, Ms. L. said that she had two children with her deceased ex-husband and a nearly 4-year-old daughter with her current husband (who no longer lives with her). Every day, she makes a living by selling lottery tickets and helping sell noodles.
Talking about her middle son, Duong Quoc Trung (21 years old, the person who poured gasoline on Mrs. L.), the mother affirmed that in the past, her son was very gentle, filial, and knew how to help his mother. About 2 years ago, Trung asked his mother to go to Da Lat to work for someone's company to earn money and then did not return home for a long time. During the time he was away, Trung regularly sent money to his mother, and did not show any unusual signs. On the 5th day of the Lunar New Year, Trung returned home after a long time away from home. After receiving 10 million VND from his son, Mrs. L. and her family began to notice that the young man was behaving strangely.
"I see that he often smokes a lot, stays up late talking to someone, and often leaves home to wander around. Before, my son had nothing on his body, but now he has tattoos. A few days ago, he asked me for money to buy a bus ticket to go back to work in Da Lat, but I saw that he was still sick so I asked him to stay home for a few more days. Since he came back, he has changed his personality, constantly asking for money. I told him, when I have free time, I will arrange to take him to the hospital for a check-up," Ms. L. shared.
Ms. L. said that when she arrived at the local hospital, the doctors gave her first aid and quickly transferred her to Cho Ray Hospital. At that time, she did not know the extent of her injuries, but was only concerned about her son at home.
When asked by a reporter if she was angry because her child doused her with gasoline and burned her, the mother, despite her pain, tried to shake her head: "I'm never angry with my child. No matter what he does, he's still my child. Maybe he worked hard for a long time and was under pressure, depressed, or he got a tattoo and was "tortured". He's very gentle, not like that...".
On February 25, the Investigation Police Department of Tra Vinh Province Police decided to temporarily detain Duong Quoc Trung (born 2004, residing in Tra Vinh City, Tra Vinh Province) for "murder". According to initial information, on the afternoon of February 24, Ms. NNPL (42 years old; residing in Ward 7, Tra Vinh City, working as a lottery ticket seller) was doused with a 1.5 liter bottle of gasoline by her biological son, Duong Quoc Trung (21 years old), and then set on fire with a lighter. Trung also used bricks and nunchaku to "interact" with Ms. L's head.
When the incident occurred, many people near the scene used fire extinguishers to put out the fire and control and arrest Trung. Ms. L. suffered severe burns and was taken to Tra Vinh General Hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred to Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC) for treatment.
Trung used to work in another province and returned home around January 2025. Recently, Trung has shown signs of severe depression and often quarrels with his mother.
Regarding the above incident, the two young men who participated in the rescue were unexpectedly commended. Mr. Nguyen Van Nhu, Chairman of Tra Vinh City People's Committee, highly appreciated and recognized the bravery of Mr. Khang and Mr. Tai, because this was a beautiful image. From there, he decided to commend and unexpectedly award certificates of merit to the two men.
