On the morning of May 11, 2024, Mr. M.X.P. (born in 1983) went to the Commune Police to report that his younger brother, Mr. M.V.C. (35 years old, Deputy Director of a construction design company in Can Tho), lost contact after leaving home the previous afternoon.

Not having time to recover because of worry, Mr. C.'s family suddenly received a message from the victim's own Zalo account. The content of the request to transfer 10 billion VND in ransom, and at the same time accompanied by a threat: "Do not report to the police, otherwise you will pay the price".

This information was immediately urgently reported to the Can Tho City Police. Colonel Huynh Minh Tho, Head of the Criminal Police Department, directly directed the case. Nearly 30 officers and soldiers were mobilized, and at the same time coordinated with the Vinh Long Provincial Police, the Criminal Police Department and many professional units in Ho Chi Minh City. The total force reached nearly 100 people, showing their determination to rescue the hostages at all costs.

The initial investigation results identified the mastermind as Nguyen Huu Nghia (born 1977, living in Dong Thap) and his younger brother Nguyen Thanh Nguyen (born 1987). To implement the plan, Nguyen went online to buy fake citizen IDs, then rented cars and houses to avoid being identified.

The two brothers, Nghia – Nguyen, also attracted Ly Minh Chanh and Nguyen Quoc Thanh, who were subjects who fell into the forbidden substance of wandering in Can Tho, to pretend to be a house repairman. Pre-made scenario: Nguyen called Mr. C. to invite him to a rented house in Can Tho to discuss the repair. When Mr. C. entered, Chanh and Thanh pretended to work and then suddenly used tear gas spray. The victim was tied up, robbed of all his property, then taken to another house in Vinh Long for detention.

On the night of May 11, 2024, through many professional measures, the police arrested Nguyen Huu Nghia while he was moving on the road. Testimony and investigation data quickly helped the force determine where the victim was detained.

When breaking into the house in Vinh Long, the scouts found Nguyen holding a knife to Mr. C.'s neck and constantly shouted: "Prepare money, prepare the car, release the accomplices, otherwise it will harm the hostages".

In the situation of thousands of pounds hanging by the hair, the police repeatedly persuaded the subject to let go of the knife to enjoy leniency. However, Nguyen was extremely aggressive.

At about 3:20 a.m. on May 12, 2024, when detecting the negligent subject, Colonel Huynh Minh Tho and his scouts immediately rushed in, knocked him down, stripped him of his knife and successfully controlled him. Mr. C. was rescued safely, ending nearly 36 hours of tension. Soon after, two accomplices, Chanh and Thanh, were also arrested. All subjects were moved to Can Tho to serve the investigation.
