Collision kills 6 in Son La: bus driver's test results revealed

The Investigation Police Agency, Son La Provincial Police, has decided to initiate criminal proceedings, detain and arrest the driver of the passenger bus in the accident at 11:30 p.m. on February 21 in Yen Chau district for investigation.

The particularly serious accident occurred on National Highway 6 in Thin village (Sap Vat commune, Yen Chau district, Son La). A passenger car traveling from Son La to Hanoi collided with a tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction.

The accident resulted in the death of 6 people, including 5 passengers on the bus and the tractor driver. 8 injured people were taken to Yen Chau District General Hospital - 5-6km from the scene. Some more serious victims were transferred to Son La Provincial General Hospital and Viet Duc Hospital, Hanoi.

According to Son La Provincial Police, the initial cause was determined to be that the bus driver reached a curve on the road, the road surface was slippery due to the rain, leading to loss of control of speed. Then, the rear of the bus hit the front of a tractor-trailer going in the opposite direction.

At that time, the passenger car with license plate 26F - 009.08 driven by Mr. Nguyen Dinh H (born in 1983, residing in Hamlet 1, Phu Luu Te Commune, My Duc District, Hanoi) traveling from Son La to Hanoi collided with a tractor-trailer with license plate 36C -095.93 pulling a semi-trailer with license plate 36R - 004.73 driven by Mr. Do Xuan T (born in 1986, residing in Xuan Mai Apartment, Dong Hai Ward, Thanh Hoa City, Thanh Hoa Province) traveling in the opposite direction.

Breath alcohol test of the bus driver showed 0.000 mg/L of breath, negative for narcotics. For the tractor driver, urine test showed negative for narcotics; blood alcohol level pending test results.

Based on the preliminary investigation results, the cause of the accident was determined to be due to rain, slippery road surface, the bus driver could not control the speed, so when turning, the rear half of the vehicle was thrown into the opposite lane and collided with the tractor trailer.

The passenger car driver has a Class E Driver's License No. 010107002409 issued by the Son La Department of Transport on October 14, 2024, valid until October 14, 2029. The passenger car has a Certificate of Inspection No. EB 1224139 issued by the Son La Vehicle Inspection Joint Stock Company on November 2, 2024, valid until May 1, 2025.

According to a video recorded by local people, at the scene, the passenger bus and the tractor trailer were deformed, blocking both directions of National Highway 6. Debris was scattered on the road. Mixed in with the noise of the rescue work being urgently carried out, confirming the passengers on the bus, the sound of asking questions... were the cries of the victims' families. The sobbing cries of a woman who collapsed at the scene of the tragic accident, calling out "my grandchild, my grandchild" made many people feel heartbroken.

Immediately upon receiving information about the accident, the Prime Minister directed to send his warmest regards to the injured and condolences to the relatives and families of the deceased. At the same time, he directed the leaders of Son La province and the police force to go to the scene to direct the handling of the accident's consequences.

The Prime Minister requested the Chairman of the People's Committee of Son La province to urgently direct the immediate arrangement of all medical conditions and medicines to treat the victims, minimizing human and property losses.

Assess the causes and immediately implement solutions to overcome existing problems and shortcomings; urgently clarify direct and indirect causes related to the accident.

The Prime Minister assigned the Minister of Public Security to direct the Son La Provincial Police and relevant police units to urgently investigate and clarify the cause of the accident.
