Lau Ba Li followed his parents to Laos when he was young, so he can no longer speak Vietnamese fluently. At the age of 20, Li worked as a hired excavator driver and became acquainted with Va Y Sua. "If you two like each other, then just move in together, don't get married yet. She gave birth to two sons," Lau Ba Li said.

Y Sua stays at home to raise the children, while Li still travels around with the excavator, earning every penny to take care of the family and get married, because according to Mong people's customs, they are not considered husband and wife until they get married. When she earned some money, Li thought about a big wedding with the woman who gave birth to her two children.

But life is not as this Hmong guy expected. Y Sua took all of Li's savings and ran away with her lover, leaving behind her first child, over 2 years old, and a 4-month-old baby.

"Having spent all the money, she asked to return, but I did not accept. Luckily, the two children had grandparents to take care of them," Li said.

Trafficking banned substances to get money to get married

On June 23, 2023, Li drove a motorbike to take Bon Ma to receive a backpack containing banned substances from 3 Lao men in the forest area of Thanh Thuy commune (Thanh Chuong, Nghe An).

After receiving the goods, Li and Bon Ma went deep into the interior of Vietnam. The next day, the two went to Thanh Tien hamlet (Vo Liet commune, Thanh Chuong district), Bon Ma told Li to look after the banned substances, and he went to meet the buyer to get the money. When Bon Ma left, Li was discovered and arrested by the police with 2.2kg of heroin.

At the trial, Lau Ba Li admitted the acts as charged in the indictment. This man said he agreed to sell banned substances with Bon Ma to shop and get married.

Li confided that when she learned that her lover was pregnant, she was very happy and wanted to get married as soon as possible. Li also raised 7 buffaloes and cows, but she regretted selling each one, because she thought of letting the buffaloes and cows give birth, raising more herds, and earning a living to raise 3 small children.

"Sell cattle to get married or sell banned substances to get married, which is more profitable?", one person asked. The Mong ethnic man honestly replied: "At that time, I didn't think so. Now that I know, it's too late."

When Lau Ba Li was arrested, her lover decided to go to Thailand to work with the growing pregnancy in her belly.

In this case, Lau Ba Li acted as an accomplice, the crime was simple, the defendant was an ethnic minority, his knowledge of the law was limited, the investigation and trial process appeared sincere. , repentance, repentance... These are circumstances that mitigate the penalty according to the provisions of law.

Comprehensively reviewing the case, the first-instance Trial Panel sentenced Lau Ba Li to life imprisonment.
