On the morning of May 10, many southern provinces encountered heavy rain, causing a series of provinces and cities to be 'flooded' in the country. The persistent rain has caused continuous obstacles to people's travel activities, and the problem of street drainage is of concern.
According to records on the morning of May 10, a particularly heavy rain appeared throughout the districts of Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City caused many roads to be flooded. From early morning, people struggled to move through flooded roads.
At 7 o'clock, at Linh Dong Street, Thu Duc City, the water was flooded with extremely fast flowing water. In the area of the intersection of Linh Dong - Ly The Xuyen, it becomes a "flooded navel" when water from the highlands is poured here. The strong water not only flooded people's houses but also damaged doors and other items. Many people fell in this area.
At about 8 o'clock, a large number of people were stuck in the middle of the water and could not move. Mr. Son (living on National Highway 13) is on his way to work in Binh Tho Ward but 3 hours have passed and he has not yet arrived at work. "Wherever I ran, the water flooded there, in some places the water was more flooded than the wheels. Then I pushed. When he arrived at Ly The Xuyen street, the water was so strong that he had to put the car on the side. It's like not going to work today," Mr. Son said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cam, a resident of Ly The Xuyen street, said that every time it rains heavily, this road is like a big stream. The water flows very strongly and often washes away the motorbikes of passersby. By 8:30 a.m., the flooding situation on Linh Dong Street, Ly The Xuyen was still serious. A large number of people still have to stop on both sides of the road without being able to move.
At Street No. 1, is one of the heaviest flooded roads in Binh Hung residential area (Binh Chanh District) this morning. Heavy rain caused the water to rise and recede slowly, affecting the movement of people.
At 8 am, Le Co Street (Binh Tan District) was still deeply flooded after the rain. People struggled to move through the flooded section, trying to get into the middle of the road where the water was less flooded to stay safe. Sitting in a café overlooking the flooded road, a man said: "I live here, this road is flooded every time it rains, so I am used to it. This morning, it suddenly rained too heavily, so far it is still deeply flooded, and the water has not receded. This road is very slow to recede, I don't know if the water has receded by noon," he added.
At Bui Vien pedestrian street, the rain this morning caused this route to be flooded. Ms. Nguyen Thanh Dao (62 years old, in District 1) selling water in Bui Vien pedestrian street said that heavy rain suddenly fell causing the trade to slow down. "Normally, from 6:30 to 7 o'clock, people and tourists go out on the street and have a busy breakfast, but now there is no one because of the heavy rain," Ms. Dao said.
Besides Ho Chi Minh City, neighboring provinces and cities also experienced prolonged rain and caused severe flooding. From 7 a.m., the area bordering Di An City (Binh Duong) and Hoa An Ward (Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai) was partially flooded, causing congestion right at the red light at the intersection of Suoi Siep. This is an arterial road connecting Dong Nai with Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, so many motorcyclists have difficulty moving, and the flow of vehicles is long.
In Dong Nai province, there are also many flooded locations, the water flows in a fast stream, causing some vehicles to be swept away, motorcyclists to fall. In Trang Bom district, the heavily flooded area at Phu Son junction (intersection of National Highway 1 and Bac Son - Long Thanh road); provincial road 767 section through Song May Industrial Park...
Explaining the cause of rain in Ho Chi Minh City. This morning, Mr. Le Dinh Quyet, Head of the Forecast Department of the Southern and Central Highlands Hydrometeorological Station, said that the northwest-southeast longitude low-pressure trough with an axis through the North and the South East Sea area gradually strengthened and dominated the weather in the South. The southwest wind has medium intensity.
According to Mr. Quyet, this weather system usually causes rain in the evening and night, but sometimes it rains in the early morning. This depends on the operation process as well as the interaction between the systems, creating small-scale disturbances. When the conditions are met (humid heat reaches the saturation threshold), rain will occur like this morning.
"The cause of this rain is a combination of the activity of the low-level southwest wind pushing moisture from the sea into and the longitude low trough (a low trough with an axis close to the Earth's longitude). These two weather patterns interact with each other, causing disturbances," Mr. Quyet said.
According to experts from the Meteorological Station, this is the time when Ho Chi Minh City enters the rainy season, the rains at the beginning of the season will develop quickly, the clouds will develop quickly, and the intensity of rain will be heavy.
"Compared to the rainfall in 24 hours so far, the rain data above is not abnormal. But in just a few hours - a rain with rainfall measured over 200 mm is very rare," said a representative of the Meteorological Station.
This unit further explained: "From 5-6:30 a.m., there is a total of 197.6mm, continuously every 10 minutes there is over 10mm of rainfall, especially from 5:50 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., there is a 41mm amount, that is, the amount of rain in 10 minutes is equal to a normal rainy day or a rain that lasts several hours."
It is forecasted that in the next 2-7 days, the northwest-southeast longitude trough with an axis passing through the North and the southern area of the East Sea will gradually strengthen and dominate the weather in the South. The southwest wind has a weak medium intensity.
Above, the subtropical high pressure with an axis through the Central Vietnam has a stable intensity, around May 11, the trend gradually lowers the axis to the South and weakens gradually, by about May 14-15, it encroaches west and has an axis across the South - Central Vietnam.
Therefore, during this period, the weather in the South is cloudy, sunny days. From May 10-14, rain increased in area and amount, with showers and thunderstorms in many places, moderate rain, heavy rain, locally very heavy rain. In the following days, the rain decreased only sporadically, in some places moderate rain and heavy rain. During thunderstorms, people need to watch out for strong gusty winds, tornadoes, lightning, and hail.
