Driver who caused a series of collisions involving 8 cars on Phu My bridge has been officially arrested and prosecuted.

Regarding the series of collisions at Phu My bridge ramp, the Investigation Police Agency of Thu Duc City Police, Ho Chi Minh City, has initiated a case to investigate and clarify the responsibilities of related individuals.

The Investigation Police Agency of Thu Duc City Police simultaneously prosecuted and temporarily detained driver Trinh Kim Dung (born in 1988, residing in Kien Giang province) for the crime of Violating regulations on road traffic participation, according to Article 260 of the 2015 Penal Code.

This move was made by the investigation agency a week after Dung caused a collision on Phu My Bridge, District 7, causing huge property damage; 3 people were injured, and traffic jams lasted. Of these, 2 container trucks and 6 cars were damaged (3 cars caught fire).

In addition, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, Dung violated regulations on load capacity by carrying more than 50% more than the permitted weight. At the time of the collision, the technical situation on Phu My Bridge was stable; the traffic signal system was also fully installed and in accordance with relevant standards and regulations.

According to the investigation, on the afternoon of August 8, Dung drove a 14.4-ton truck carrying seafood from Kien Giang to Khanh Hoa. At 2:30 p.m., the truck drove up Phu My Bridge to Nguyen Thi Dinh Street to enter the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway. When going down Phu My Bridge, driver Dung discovered that the car's brake cylinder had exploded. At that time, the car was going down the bridge at high speed, causing the driver to lose control and causing a series of collisions with 7 cars going in the same direction in front of it, causing a series of collisions that damaged and deformed 7 cars, and burned 3 cars. The chaotic scene stretched for nearly 100 meters at the scene.

The collision caused severe damage to the vehicles, including a Volvo that caught fire, trapping the driver inside. At that time, many passersby acted bravely to break the car windows and pull the victims out before the car burned down.

The timely rescue action helped prevent any loss of life in the collision and was filmed by passersby, posted on social media and in the press, attracting much praise for the brave act.

The Traffic Police Department of Thu Duc City coordinated with relevant units to verify information and proposed to reward 5 individuals for their brave actions in saving people, including: Mr. Mai Le Duy Quang (born in 1980, residing in Thu Duc City) who climbed into the front of the Volvo car, broke the windshield and pulled the trapped person out; Mr. Nguyen Hoang Truong (born in 1983, residing in Thu Duc City) used a fire extinguisher to spray into the cabin to stop the fire; Mr. Vu Thanh Tung (born in 1997, residing in Thu Duc City) also assisted in rescuing the injured person from the Volvo car; Mr. Lee Geumho (born in 1980, Korean nationality) also directly pulled the car door and rescued the person; Mr. Dang Binh Quang (born in 1974, residing in District 7) assisted in pushing the car door and rescuing the victim.

On the afternoon of August 14, Thu Duc City People's Committee held a conference to commend and award certificates of merit from the Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for the brave actions of saving people of the above 5 individuals.

At the conference, Mr. Mai Le Duy Quang shared: "I and everyone else only thought about saving people in that situation. I think that any Vietnamese person in that situation would think and act like us."

"All five people did not hesitate to sacrifice themselves to save people in distress. They are ordinary people, but they have done noble deeds. We would like to send them our gratitude and thanks and hope that these noble actions will continue to spread in society," said Vice Chairman of Thu Duc City People's Committee Nguyen Ky Phung.

Mr. Quang said that on the afternoon of August 8, while driving his motorbike to buy a drill bit, he heard a rumbling sound under the bridge. His intuition told him that there was a big accident, so he rushed forward and saw a series of 8 damaged and deformed cars stretching nearly 100 meters. With a quick observation, Mr. Quang saw that the front windshield could save the driver. He immediately jumped on the hood and kicked hard to break the windshield, approaching the injured person. "The injured driver was in pain and kept saying 'too hot, too hot', and the fire had reached the back seat, approaching the driver's seat," Mr. Quang recalled.
