On February 7, 2025, the Criminal Police Division of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police arrested Trinh Phuong Mai (born 1988, residing in An Hung Ward, Thanh Hoa City), a subject who appropriated property by divination, exile, and expiration via social networks.
The story began in early 2022, when Trinh Phuong Mai began to attract the attention of the online community with posts about divination, horoscopes, and fortune telling. Thereby, Mai has seduced people in need to seek spiritual help, especially those who are struggling in life, work or love.
Around April 2024, Ms. D.T.T.O. in Tu Son City, Bac Ninh Province came to Mai via Facebook to ask to see fortune telling. Mai quickly took advantage of Ms. O.'s trust to come up with fictional spiritual stories, in order to attack the target's fearful psychology. Mai even "fabricated" situations to persuade Ms. O. to continue transferring money to perform offerings and dissolution.
In one case, Trinh Phuong Mai affirmed that during the ceremony, Ms. O. had a child with her, so it was necessary to carry out further funeral ceremonies. Another time, Mai gave the reason for the failure of the ceremony due to the goal of eating meat stewed with shrimp sauce, making the offering ceremony impossible to complete. To increase her anxiety, Mai even sent a picture of the traffic and told her that Ms. O. had a bad omen and had to be careful when traveling.
These fabricated information made Ms. O. confused and continued to transfer money to Trinh Phuong Mai. From July 2024 until her arrest, Ms. O. transferred to Mai a total of more than 1 billion VND to perform the rituals of dissolution, charm relief, and dissolution.
Trinh Phuong Mai takes advantage of the lightheartedness and gullibility of those who come to her with the desire to find solutions to problems in life. By sophisticated tricks, Mai not only took advantage of her belief in spiritual problems but also manipulated the victim's psychology to constantly ask for money transfers for unfounded reasons. Every time she transfers money, Mai creates a new reason to continue to maintain her profiteering.
When the authorities got involved, Mai confessed that during the past time, she had appropriated money from many people, but the most prominent object was Ms. O. - who was deceived into losing more than 1 billion VND. Although the target was skeptical many times, under the psychological impact and seemingly reasonable advice from Mai, Ms. O. continued to trust and send money.
Immediately after receiving Ms. D.T.T.O.'s denunciation, the Criminal Police Division of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police quickly entered the investigation. By professional measures, the police force has identified Trinh Phuong Mai as the mastermind in this case. Mai used the social network Facebook to profit from people in need of spiritual help.
On February 6, 2025, the authorities arrested Trinh Phuong Mai and collected evidence related to her profiteering. At the police office, Mai has admitted all her criminal acts and is coordinating investigations to clarify many other cases.
This incident not only caused serious financial losses to the victims, but also a warning about the dangers of participating in spiritual activities and online divination. Although it may be a psychological need or a desire to solve personal problems, participating in these services has many potential risks, especially when the subject can exploit the lightheartedness and gullibility of others.
Authorities recommend that people should be very vigilant when looking for divination, fortune telling, and dispensation services via social networks. Instead of looking for unclear channels, people need to seek advice from experts, psychologists or reputable agencies to solve problems in life.
