Although mone.y scams through social networks are not too strange and are warned often, many people still fall into the trap of criminals in times of being caught off guard.
Viet Hoang (Hanoi) owns a normal Facebook account, but suddenly one day many strange accounts sent friend requests to him. In particular, most of them are names that sound very "squeaky" and use avatars are beautiful girls, even somewhat dressed cool.
Initially, Hoang said he suspected these accounts were "fake" but then randomly checked some and found that they made a lot of friends, had posts and interactions, so although it was not clear who was in real life, he still agreed to make friends.
Like Viet Hoang, many Facebook users in Vietnam reported occasionally receiving friend requests or thoughtful inquiry messages from strange accounts using images of young, beautiful girls.
Not only asking strangers, many mone.y scammers also approach victims by pretending there is a mistake and then chatting and making friends to build trust. Accordingly, these accounts start conversations, make brief greetings such as "Hi", "Hi brother" or send emoticons.
After receiving feedback from prey, it will provide probing information such as asking where you live, then pretending to have met at a specific local event (e.g. wedding, birthday party, etc.).
When denied, it will move to apologize for being "mistaken" in order to redirect the story to another topic in order to prolong the story. When seeing beautiful account holders asking and starting conversations, many victims are caught off guard and the sophisticated trap will be set later.
Recently, in Da Nang, subject Chau Hoang Khang used a fake social network account of a beautiful gir.l in a group of "single women", talked love with a man and then lured mone.y transfer.
At the police office, Khang testified that in June he went to Cambodia to work for a company specializing in online mone.y fraud (name and address unknown). The company gave Khang 2 Facebook and Zalo accounts with the same name Nguyen Thi Kieu Trang to perform the act.
In October 2023, Khang uses the virtual nick Kieu Trang with a profile picture of a beautiful gir.l to get acquainted with Mr. Huy in the group of "single women" on social media. After a short period of intimacy, Kieu Trang confided in her love and enticed Mr. Huy to participate in business investment. After receiving the victi.m's mone.y using multiple bank accounts, Khang cut off contact. By November 2023, Khang was arrested.
Guys like Kang aren't rare. Authorities have stepped in and continuously conducted investigations as well as arrested impostors on Facebook to swindle mone.y.
As in the case of Nguyen Van Hieu in Ha Tinh, he set up many virtual Facbooks, posted avatars of beautiful women, made friends and texted with many men. When approached, Hieu said the family was facing economic difficulties and wanted to borrow mone.y to support. Believing in the "miserable narratives", the two men transferred Hieu more than 60 million VND, a phone worth more than 4 million VND. Receiving the mone.y, Hieu cut off contact with the victims, did not return the mone.y and property as promised. Hieu was arrested in July 2022 for his behavior.
According to Vu Ngoc Son, CTO of National Cyber Security Joint Stock Company (NCS), using virtual nicks to make friends is the first step in a chain of actions that these subjects will take. He explained: "Typically, the subject will try to befriend the 'prey', after making friends, will lead the victi.m into mone.y fraud scenarios such as inviting cooperation, investing at huge interest rates, offering to participate in high-paying jobs, even emotional scams."
The hea.d of NCS's security department also agreed that the general method of this trick is that subjects using virtual nicks with avatars (avatars) are shown as beautiful, attractive girls or successful, rich businessmen ... to easily win the affection and trust of the victi.m.
