On March 27, the Sindbad submarine carrying 45 tourists to a coral reef suddenly and mysteriously sank in the middle of the Red Sea. The incident left many people dead. At the same time, it sparked a search for the mysterious cause of this horrifying incident.
Dozens of tourists were on board the ship, which sank near a port about a kilometer off the Egyptian coast. Mystery still surrounds how the submarine hit a reef near the shore and began to take on water.
Local authorities said six people had died, while the Moscow embassy in Cairo said five Russian citizens had died in the disaster that occurred at 10 a.m. local time. Two of the dead were children.
The first victims were identified as anesthesiologist Ravil Valiullin, 40, and his wife Kristina, 39, a pediatrician. Both worked at the Urussu Central Hospital in Tatarstan, a central Russian region.
According to the company's website, the submarine operator has a "team of experts" with "many years of experience", adding that its submarines "are designed in Finland to withstand underwater pressure up to 75m, ensuring safety and reliability".
In case of emergency, the company said "oxygen masks are located above the head and life jackets are located under the seat".
Some media outlets have suggested that the Sindbad submarine was in âpoor conditionâ before todayâs fateful voyage. Russian news agencies have reported that tourists have complained about problems with the vessel, including glass windows and the quality of life jackets.
"The glass was broken and scratched, visibility was only 50/50. It was difficult to see the fish and the diving performance," a report from TASS news agency said.
Other complaints were of âold and broken life jacketsâ. The report said: âThere were very few life jackets and no one knew how to properly remove them. Before the tour, the tour guide did not give instructions and did not tell them what to do in case of an emergency. So after hitting the reef at depth, people did not know what to do and how to swim out. Water flooded into the cabin and people panicked.â
A survivor of the tragedy said the boat began to sink with its doors still open, forcing tourists to escape on their own as the vessel filled with water. Elena Boldareva and her husband swam away from the Sindbad tourist submarine as it began to sink at its landing pontoon off the coast of Hurghada. Her daughter and mother were among the 39 people rescued, who were taken to hospital. Six people died and at least one chil.d remains in a critical condition.
Boldareva said people were trying their best to save themselves while tourists on boats near the Sindbad Club Hotel marina rushed to pull people out of the water. One survivor, who was not named, told a similar story to Russia's Mash TV channel.
"As my family was standing on the pontoon and preparing to board the submarine, the submarine suddenly sank, even though the hatch was still open. The man in charge of loading the cargo shouted 'stop, stop, stop' and started pushing us back onto the pontoon," she said.
She claimed the submarine had begun to dive before anyone boarded.
Another passenger named Valliulina was said to have been reunited with her two children, aged 10 and 15, in hospital after initial reports raised fears she may have died on the submarine.
The shocking claim that the trapdoor had been opened came after other visitors raised the alarm, sharing how their past experiences had left them shaken.
Tripadvisor user stubbyd, from Bridgend, asserted: "They also 'highlight' the captain's skills. But the constant collision of the submarine with the seabed is not good for the marine life, the seabed, and ultimately the submarine itself!" Traveler Alexander S also said he did not recommend the experience. "The submarine hit rocks/corals multiple times and kicked up sand," he wrote on Tripadvisor.
Ms Collins, a heavy truck driver from Wigan, said she would never set foot on a submarine again after hearing about the tragic incident near the resort of Hurghada on Monday morning. She and her partner Sharon, 54, booked the submarine diving trip on Monday after seeing an advertisement on social media. They spent about 40 minutes underwater at a depth of 25 metres before returning to shore by boat. "I was shocked, saddened and in disbelief when I heard about the tragic news about the people on the submarine," Ms Collins said. "I think it has made me scared of submarines."
