Van Thinh Phat case: Mysterious person wants to help Ms. Lan overcome the consequences of nearly 10,000 billion

The Van Thinh Phat case continues to have new developments, a friend of Ms. Truong My Lan wants to pay the debt of 250 million USD and lend the defendant an additional 130 million USD to remedy the consequences.

On the afternoon of September 24, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court continued to question other defendants in the case of Fraudulent appropriation of property, M.oney laundering and Illegal transportation of currency across the border related to Van Thinh Phat Group Joint Stock Company, Saigon Commercial Joint Stock Bank ( SCB) and related units.

A rather surprising development in today's trial was that lawyer Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang (Ho Chi Minh City Bar Association, defending the four defendants in the case), although not the defense lawyer for Truong My Lan, asked the panel of judges for permission to talk to her.

At the trial, lawyer Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang said that through lawyer Trang, a friend of Truong My Lan in the US wanted to represent 3 shareholders of Capital Palace building (No. 29 Lieu Giai, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi) to pay 250 million USD borrowed from a foreign bank.

According to the lawyer, the building is currently valued at VND2,112 billion and this friend also wants to lend Truong My Lan an additional 130 million USD to compensate for the losses of the bondholders. Thus, the total amount that Ms. Lan's friend wants to spend is nearly VND10 billion.

For project 6A (Trung Son, Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City) of 26 hectares, Truong My Lan's friend will deposit a sum of m.oney into the temporary account of the prosecution agency and the defendant must return the project to them, and the purchase and sale will be discussed later.

"If Ms. Truong My Lan agrees, I will represent her friend in the US to negotiate and discuss specifically to help Ms. Lan overcome the consequences of this case" - Lawyer Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang said.

Ms. Truong My Lan said that the 6A project has not been seized yet, so she always wants to recover all the damages of the case, as long as that person has real m.oney and wants to do a real project, she does not care how much it is worth.

Responding to the two above contents of lawyer Huyen Trang, Truong My Lan said that through lawyer Huyen Trang, she would like to thank her friends in the US. She agreed with the two contents that the lawyer just mentioned and will discuss and reach a specific agreement later. "In this difficult p.eriod, having friends stand up to support the bondholders to overcome the problem is valuable, I agree", the defendant said.

After listening to the lawyer's presentation and with Truong My Lan's consent, Chief Judge Nguyen Thi Hoa requested the parties to quickly prepare documents and send them to the Panel of Judges for consideration and support in remedying the consequences.

Previously, on September 19, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court opened the first-instance trial of the case that occurred at Van Thinh Phat Group Joint Stock Company, phase 2. This trial continued to clarify the illegal acts of Ms. Truong My Lan and 33 accomplices.

According to the Supreme People's Procuracy's a.ccusation, the defendants committed the crimes of: Fraudulent appropriation of property, M.oney laundering and illegal transportation of currency across the border. At the beginning of the trial, the panel of judges examined the background of Ms. Truong My Lan - who was a.ccused of all three crimes above. At this time, she maintained a calm attitude, clearly and coherently answering questions about her personal background.

Similar to the previous trial, defendant Chu Lap Co - husband of Ms. Truong My Lan (defendant a.ccused of "Money Laundering"), continued to be assisted by an English interpreter to ensure he could understand and participate in the questioning process.

During the trial, both Mr. Chu Lap Co and Truong Hue Van - niece of Ms. Truong My Lan (defendant a.ccused of "Fraudulent appropriation of property"), were calm and did not show much emotion when asked by the panel of judges.

Notably, in contrast to the calmness of Truong My Lan, her husband and niece, some accomplices in the case could not keep calm. A typical example is defendant Thai Thi Thanh Thao (former director of Wholesale customer service at SCB Bank, Saigon branch; defendant a.ccused of "Fraudulent appropriation of property").

And defendant To Thi Anh Dao (former Deputy General Director of Van Thinh Phat Investment Group Joint Stock Company; defendant a.ccused of "Illegally transporting currency across the border") burst into tears when questioned.
