Recently, the grave robber who demanded 5 billion ransom in Thanh Hoa was arrested by the authorities. The most shocking thing is the identity of this person, no one is a stranger to the victim's family.
Accordingly, on the morning of September 13, the police of Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa confirmed that they had arrested Luu Thanh Nam (born in 1987), residing in Quang Loc commune, in connection with the case of digging up graves, stealing the remains of the deceased and then demanding a ransom of 5 billion VND from the family.
Nam was caught in the net late in the afternoon of September 12. At the investigation agency, the subject confessed that the reason for committing the above act was due to debt. Specifically, on the evening of September 9, he brought a shovel and a knife and rode a motorbike to the cemetery of Trieu Cong village to dig up Mr. H.'s grave.
When he saw the coffin lid, Nam used a knife to punch a hole in the lid, put his hand into the coffin and took the skull and part of the remains. After that, he hid the remains in a landfill near the cemetery and returned home. On the morning of September 10, Nam used a junk SIM card to make friends on Zalo and texted Ms. L. to threaten and blackmail her.
The police also found evidence, including the skull and other bones of the deceased, hidden by Nam on the roadside, about 100 meters from Trieu Cong cemetery.
Previously, at around 5:00 a.m. on September 10, Ms. Hoang Thi L. (born in 1989), residing in Hien Tay village, Quang Luu commune, received a text message from a strange phone number with threatening content: "Ms. L., prepare 5 billion for me, from now until Thursday, do not report to the police. If your family reports to the police, we will never find your father-in-law's skeleton..." This text message made Ms. L.'s family extremely scared.
After receiving the news, Ms. L. decided to report the incident to the Quang Loc Commune Police, then went with the police officers to Trieu Cong village cemetery, Quang Loc commune to check her father-in-law's grave (Mr. LTH had been buried 3 years ago), and discovered that it had been dug up and turned upside down by bad guys.
On the night of September 10, the forensic force of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police conducted an examination of the scene to clarify the incident. The results showed that a part of the remains (head) of the deceased had been taken away.
A source from Lao Dong said that the subject dug 1.5 meters deep and 2 meters long along the coffin's location. He did not knock down the coffin lid but broke the glass at the top of the coffin and took away the skull and the cervical and thoracic vertebrae.
After only 2 days of investigation, Quang Xuong District Police and the Criminal Police Department of Thanh Hoa Province Police identified the main perpetrator as Luu Thanh Nam, a neighbor and cousin of Ms. L's husband. The discovery that the mastermind was a close relative of the victim left many people surprised and shocked.
With a series of acts such as grave robbing, hiding bones and then sending messages to blackmail other people's relatives, how can Nam be handled?
Lawyer Luu Thi Kieu Trang (Director of Khai Hoan Tam Law Firm, Hanoi Bar Association) said that according to Article 319 of the 2015 Penal Code, anyone who digs or destroys graves, appropriates objects in graves or on graves or commits other acts of violating corpses, graves or remains will be criminally prosecuted for the crime of Violating corpses, graves or remains with a penalty of non-custodial reform for up to 2 years or imprisonment from 3 months to 2 years.
In cases where the act negatively affects social security and order; appropriates or destroys objects of historical or cultural value; for despicable motives or to appropriate body parts or remains, the penalty shall be 2-7 years in prison.
According to available information, Nam was determined by the authorities to have dug up and taken a part of Mr. H's remains to hide and then sent text messages to blackmail the deceased's daughter-in-law. This is an act that shows signs of the crime of Violating corpses, graves, and remains under Article 319 of the 2015 Penal Code. Therefore, the authorities will focus on consolidating evidence related to this act to consider criminal responsibility for the suspect.
Regarding the act of sending text messages to blackmail the family of the deceased, this is an act that shows signs of the crime of Extortion of property according to Article 170 of the 2015 Penal Code. In case of being held criminally responsible, the suspect may face a sentence of 1-5 years in prison.
