Stomach cancer, also known as stomach cancer, is a condition in which cells in the stomach grow abnormally, out of control, leading to the formation of tumors. When it progresses, melanoma can spread around and metastasize to many other distant organs, causing many adverse health effects and leading to death if left untreated.
There are 4 stages of stomach cancer:
- Stage 0: Carcinoma, cancer cells located in the lining of the stomach.
- Stage 1: Cancer cells invade the 2nd layer of the stomach, not yet spread to other organs.
- Stage 2: Submuscular cancer, cancer cells that have invaded through the lining of the stomach.
Stage 3: Cancer cells spread to lymph nodes and distant organs.
- Stage 4: The cancer spreads throughout the body, the chances of survival are low.
There are many causes of stomach cancer such as precancerous lesions including atrophy of the gastric mucosa; cells in the gastric mucosa morphologically change like cells in the intestines and colon (intestinal transplasia); cells of the gastric mucosa transform in structure, escaping from the control of the body (paradox); H. pylori causes stomach ulcers and destroys the gastric mucosa, causing precancerous lesions; due to genetics...
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, stomach cancer is the fourth most common cancer in Vietnam, accounting for 13.4% of cancers. However, the incidence of stomach cancer in Vietnam is uneven, with the Central and Central Highlands regions having higher incidence than other regions.
ASS. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, head of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, 108th Military Central Hospital, said that in recent years, the rate of patients with stomach cancer coming to the hospital has been increasing.
If in the past, the common age was over 50, recently the age of the disease is tending to rejuvenate, many cases are under 40 years old and many younger patients have had the disease.
Some patients are detected at an early stage, so the cure rate is high. However, not everyone is lucky, many cases are at a young age but the disease is detected late, making treatment difficult and survival rate limited.
According to Prof. Dr. Pham Hoang Ha, Head of Gastrointestinal Surgery Department, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, some habits of modern young people that easily lead to stomach cancer are abusing stimulants (alcohol, beer, cigarettes), eating foods high in nitrates such as salt, pickles, smoked meats... Erratic, unpunctual eating causes stomach damage.
Meanwhile, Prof. Nguyen Anh Tuan affirmed: "Stomach cancer is one of the common malignant diseases that are easy to metastasize. This is a dangerous disease but can be cured provided it is detected at an early stage."
To detect the disease early it is necessary to rely on 2 factors:
1. Screening in people at risk in families with cancer, long-term stomach ulcers ... Periodic examinations are required for screening.
2. Based on vague symptoms such as frequent pain in the upper belly button, bloating, indigestion, weight loss, etc.
"Therefore, I recommend that patients should not be subjective to any warning signs of the body, screening to detect and treat cancer early," Assoc. Tuan emphasized.
With the development of modern medicine, methods of treating stomach cancer are also maximized effectively, helping patients to completely cure at an early stage or prolong life at a late stage.
The outcome of treatment depends on many factors such as age, overall health, stage of the disease, type of disease and treatments used. However, if detected and treated in time, the patient's chances of survival can be enhanced.
To limit stomach cancer, Prof. Nguyen Anh Tuan recommends the following measures:
- Follow a healthy, varied diet rich in fiber and nutrients.
- Control your weight and exercise regularly.
- Limit the consumption of alcohol, stimulants and other carcinogens.
- Check for and treat stomach-related diseases, such as stomach ulcers...
Perform routine screening tests to detect any early signs of stomach cancer.
