The incident involving numerous people experiencing digestive disorders after eating bread is attracting significant public attention in Quang Ngai. Local health authorities have visited the hospital to inquire about the patients and have requested an investigation into the cause in order to resolve the issue completely.
The head of the Department of Health personally inspected the cases and requested close monitoring of each case.
On the afternoon of December 14th, Mr. Do Ngoc Hoa, Deputy Director of the Quang Ngai Provincial Department of Health, visited Phuc Hung Hospital to inquire about patients being treated for suspected food poisoning. There, he personally reviewed medical records, discussed the case with the treating doctors, and requested that medical facilities focus their resources on patient care and provide daily updates on their health status.
As instructed, hospitals must report complete clusters of cases to the Department of Health for timely coordination, and be prepared with contingency plans if the situation becomes complicated.
A family of four was hospitalized after eating sandwiches.
Among the patients currently under treatment, the case of Mr. Dang L (73 years old, Phuoc Giang commune) has caused much concern. He said that three days ago, his son bought bread from Hong Van bakery for the whole family to eat. Afterwards, all four members of the family experienced symptoms of abdominal pain and continuous diarrhea.
The two sons are in good health and recovered faster, but Mr. L and his 4-year-old grandson had to be hospitalized for monitoring. Mr. L said his health is now better than when he was admitted, but he is still tired, dizzy, and has persistent headaches. Doctors believe this case requires close monitoring due to his advanced age and signs of complications.
Over 50 inpatients have been treated for bread-related illnesses.
According to statistics to date, 50 patients are currently receiving inpatient treatment at Quang Ngai Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Quang Ngai General Hospital, and Phuc Hung General Hospital. All cases reported having eaten Hong Van bread before the onset of symptoms.
The health sector believes this cluster of cases is directly linked to foodborne illness, and the cause needs to be clarified to avoid potential harm to the community.
Take food samples and wait for test results.
The Quang Ngai Provincial Center for Disease Control collected 17 food samples from bread stalls and at 280 Nguyen Nghiem Street, the supplier of ingredients for the entire system. In addition, 6 patient samples were also collected for testing.
Production temporarily halted, full facility undergoes legal inspection.
Alongside the treatment, the inter-agency inspection team simultaneously inspected facilities producing sausages, dumplings, and butter at 280 Nguyen Nghiem Street (Cam Thanh Ward), which was identified as the main supplier of ingredients for Hong Van bread stalls.
Initial inspections revealed that the business owner failed to present complete legal documents related to food safety and production operations. For the time being, authorities have ordered a temporary suspension of all production and sales activities at Hong Van bread shop, pending official test results. Strict penalties will be applied if violations of food safety and hygiene regulations or licensing are found.
Warning to the public: Be cautious with street food.
Following this incident, the health sector advises people to monitor their health if they have consumed bread from the affected locations, and to seek medical attention promptly if they experience any unusual symptoms.
The incident is still under investigation. The upcoming test results will be crucial in determining the cause, responsibility, and subsequent course of action, ensuring public health and safety.
