A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan in the middle of the night, leaving at least 30 people injured and thousands evacuated. The violent shaking caused the house to be destroyed, social media had to be stunned when the incident happened.
Severe earthquakes and tsunami warnings
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred about 80 kilometers off the coast of the Aomori region. Although the intensity of the tremors did not reach the level of the 2011 disaster, the sudden incident in the middle of the night caused great confusion.
The quake triggered a tsunami warning, prompting authorities to immediately order evacuations for about 90,000 residents in the affected area. Although the warning was later lifted, waves 70 centimeters high were recorded, reminiscent of the horrific memory of the 2011 disaster.
Initial results showed that about 2,700 homes in Aomori Prefecture were without power. The East Japan Railway Company was also forced to suspend some train services along the northeast coast to ensure safety.
Emergency Response: Aftershock Warning
In the face of the emergency, the Japanese government responded quickly. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said a response office had been set up in the prime minister's crisis management center, and an emergency team had been convened.
"We are making every effort to assess the damage and take emergency disaster response measures, including rescue and relief operations," Kihara stressed.
What worries the public most is the warning from authorities about the possibility of a stronger aftershock in the coming days. Local media have urged the public to remain on high alert for at least a week.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the affected people directly, advising them: "Reaffirm your daily earthquake preparedness, such as making sure your belongings are secured and ready to evacuate immediately if you feel shaking."
Nuclear Power Safety: No Abnormalities
An important piece of news that helped reassure the global public was the information about nuclear power plants. Japanese power company Tohoku Electric Power said no anomalies were reported at the Higashidori and Onagawa nuclear power plants caused by the earthquake.
Japanese authorities have also informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that no anomalies have been detected at the Fukushima nuclear power plant site that was damaged after the 2011 earthquake.
Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world due to its location on the Ring of Fire, experiencing about 1,500 earthquakes each year. The 2011 disaster, when a magnitude 9.0 earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people, remains a major obsession.
Earlier this year, Japan's earthquake investigation board also issued a worrying warning about the 60-90 percent chance that a super earthquake would occur in the Nankai Trench within the next 30 years, with the worst-case scenario potentially causing trillions of losses and hundreds of thousands of people displaced. Last night's earthquake was once again a reminder of the need for disaster preparedness in the country.
