Lao Cai: Funeral dinner leaves 11 people hospitalized with suspected food poisoning

The Lao Cai Department of Health reported that 11 people, after eating at a funeral of people in San II village, Hoang Lien commune, Sapa town, had symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, repeated bowel movements, and had to be hospitalized for treatment.

According to information from the Health and Life newspaper, on August 7, the Department of Health of Lao Cai province reported that after attending a funeral in Sapa town, 11 people had symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, went out many times and had to be hospitalized for treatment.

Specifically, Mr. Má A.T.'s family held a funeral for their son in San II village, Hoang Lien commune, Sapa town and many locals, brothers and relatives in other communes attended.

Here, funeral attendees ate scattered meals from 11 noon on August 4 to the evening of August 5 with pork soup (boiled), soup, cabbage vegetable soup, white wine and white rice.

After returning home, many people experience vomiting and severe abdominal pain. At about 6:30 am on August 5, 11 people with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and loose stools were repeatedly admitted to Sapa General Hospital by family members.

Immediately after the incident, the commune police coordinated with Hoang Lien commune health station to collect food and alcohol samples at the house where the patients ate to send to the competent authorities to determine the cause.

Currently, the patients' health is gradually stable. By the afternoon of August 6, 3 people had been discharged, and it is expected that the remaining patients will be discharged home today.

According to Lao Cai Department of Health, through research of some local people, it is customary for H'Mong ethnic people to have a custom when there are funerals, people from the same village, brothers bring food such as rice, rice, meat, wine ... come to contribute to the landlord. In addition, the host often slaughters pigs, slaughters buffaloes for offerings and receptions.

Therefore, the health sector of Lao Cai province recommends that the authorities need to have appropriate forms of propaganda for people to change their unhygienic eating habits, thereby preventing the risk of food poisoning in crowded places as recently happened in the area.

Recently, there have been consecutive cases of food poisoning that have attracted attention. According to leaders of Ha Giang General Hospital, in the area where 11 children were poisoned by eating red chau berries occurred in Dong Van district.

Mr. Pham Anh Van, Director of Ha Giang General Hospital informed that the incident caused 1 child not to survive. The ill-fated pediatric patient is S.T.M (9 years old, in Chua Ó village, Ta Lung commune, Dong Van district), although he was actively treated, because the poisoning was too severe, he did not survive until nearly 20 hours on August 1. At the ICU, Ha Giang General Hospital is treating 3 grandchildren: Giang Thi My (12 years old, in Hong Ngai village, Lung Apple commune); Lau Mí No (7 years old, from Hong Ngai village, Lung Apple commune) and Sung Thi May (7 years old, from Chua Ó village, Ta Lung commune, Dong Van district). Mr. Van said that the hospital is currently treating the remaining 2 pediatric patients, whose condition is stable.

Previously, on 2 consecutive days 31/7 and 1/8, General Hospital of Dong Van district, Ha Giang province received 11 children, aged 3-12 years old who were poisoned by eating persimmons. They live in Chua Ó village, Ta Lung commune and Hong Ngai village, Lung Apple commune, Dong Van district.
