Changing her name meant changing her life — changing her life, but despite trying to go into hiding for 32 long years, the woman was investigated by police and received an arrest warrant today (February 1, 2024).

Accordingly, on February 1, 2024, the police of District 3 - Ho Chi Minh City said that they have arrested the defendant Nguyen Thi N (67 years old, of Binh Thanh district). In 1992, Nguyen Thi N was wanted for "Fraudulent misappropriation of property."

On January 31, Ms. N was arrested while hiding in Hoc Mon district. During 32 years of "hiding", Mrs. N concealed her identity by changing her surname to Le Mong H.

According to the case file, on the morning of March 17, 1992, Mrs. T.T.K (78 years old, located in District 1) and her daughter went to the D.L gold shop on Le Van Sy Street (Ward 14, District 3) to sell 5 taels of 24K gold (50 gold threads). Mr. N.V.Đ (73 years old, from Go Vap district, shop owner) agreed to buy for 462 thousand VND/thread. However, Mrs. K demanded to pay 464,000 VND/only because her gold had the number of the D.L. gold shop.

Then suddenly a woman in a blue shirt (later identified as Mrs. N) approached, conversed with Mrs. K and introduced Mrs. K to another gold shop, believed to be the same owner as D.L.'s gold shop, which was also located on this route for sale.

When they arrived, the owner said they couldn't afford it, so Mrs. K and Mrs. N went back to D.L.

At this time, Mrs. N suddenly decided to buy Mrs. K's gold for 464,000 VND/thread. Without hesitation, Mrs. K immediately agreed and gave 5 gold trees to Mrs. N, then told her daughter to go to work, she waited alone.

After taking Mrs. K's gold, Mrs. N whispered to the shopkeeper who wanted to sell 3 taels of gold, the rest she hid in her body. Getting the money and the bill, Mrs. N handed it to Mrs. K and said to wait and leave.

After a while, Mrs. K checked the bill and money and saw that it said to sell 30 gold threads for 462,000 VND/only asked the shop owner.

Mr. D said he thought Mrs. N was a relative accompanying him and only sold 3 gold trees, so he made an invoice and gave money. At this time, Mrs. K fell on her back and realized that she had been cheated of losing 2 gold trees. Ms. K immediately went to the police to report the incident.

After 32 years, this incident has not come to light until now, the main character who created this series of problems has only "come out".

This is not uncommon for fugitives to be wanted for nearly half their lives when it seems like the story is no longer remembered. It was only because of 2 gold trees that Mrs. N chose another life under a different name, not herself for 32 long years. Perhaps the harshest sentence this woman has suffered is living her life humbly, not daring to hold her head high, living under a strange name, which does not belong to her. In the end, everything went to work, and the effort of hiding and hiding turned into nothingness when the police tracked it down.

Currently, the police of District 3 Ho Chi Minh City HCMC is taking testimony and will soon try and impose a reasonable penalty for the 32-year fugitive. I wonder how those who have lived next door to Mrs. N for decades under the name Le Mong H will feel when they learn the truth. At 67, Ms. N is facing the truth, the law, which she has fearfully avoided for decades.
