NewJeans officially wrapped up their final activity as part of ADOR and HYBE on January 4 with a pre-recorded performance for the Golden Disc Awards.
The gir.l group has joined the lineup of Kpop's biggest names to celebrate the achievements of the industry's most successful artists in 2024. Although the ceremony was originally scheduled to take place on January 4 and 5, it was rescheduled for January 6 and 7 as South Korea is in national mourning following the tragic Jeju Air plane crash that killed 179 people.
Despite announcing that they would be parting ways with ADOR in November, NewJeans still honored their commitment to the company by delivering a memorable performance. Dressed in synchronized white, the five members performed some of their most popular songs, including How Sweet, Supernatural, and Attention.
NewJeans' dedication was not overlooked, as they also received two awards: "Cosmopolitan Artist Award" and "Best Digital Song" for their hi.t song How Sweet.
However, it was the group's unexpected gesture at the end of the performance that attracted the attention of the audience. Accordingly, when NewJeans was about to leave the stage, Minji (the oldest member of the group) called the girls back and they gave each other a sincere collective hug.
Fans interpreted this moment as a gesture that symbolized the end of their journey with ADOR. Some even took it as a sign of celebration when the group finally "escaped" from the brand.
While some people feel sad that the future of NewJeans outside and after ADOR is still unclear, many are still excited to see what the team will look like after overcoming these challenges.
Previously, NewJeans held a press conference to announce the termination of the exclusive contract with ADOR at midnight on November 29. At the time, the group stated: "The fault lies with HYBE and ADOR, so there is no reason for us to file a lawsuit or pay any fines." In response, ADOR filed a lawsuit seeking confirmation of the validity of the contract with the Seoul Central Court.
In addition to completing pre-scheduled ADOR commitments, members have embarked on independent projects. Recently, they created a new Instagram account called "jeanzforfree" to connect directly with fans. Or recently, the members also attracted attention when appearing in a photo shoo.t for Vouge Magazine directed by former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin. The photo shoo.t featured the members' real names instead of the group's name NewJeans, which further increased interest from the public.
Earlier, ADOR had voiced concerns about the group's independent actions. On December 18, the company stated: "We hope NewJeans members will continue to communicate with fans through official channels as before. Any entertainment conducted through segregated accounts may lead to legal issues, and we have communicated these concerns to the artists and their legal representatives."
Despite announcing his departure from the company, ADOR has recently had to take care of visa procedures for Hanni members (Australian nationality) to stay in Korea to operate in accordance with regulations. NewJeans has now created a new social media account, appearing in public with the real names of 5 members.
Up to now, the tug-of-war between NewJeans and the governing group has not stopped because there is no final ruling on the legal relationship between the two parties. If the contract dispute has not been resolved, the 5 members of NewJeans will find it very difficult to launch products and promote music. The fate of this group of women became more uncertain than ever.
