According to folk legend, since its construction, the Leshan Giant Buddha has not only protected the people but also been able to express emotions of sadness when disasters strike and happiness on important occasions of the world. human world.
Leshan Great Buddha Ruins is located in the east of Leshan city, Sichuan province, China. This is considered one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, carved directly into one side of Lang Van mountain and is up to 1,300 years old. The statue leans back against the mountain, facing the intersection of three rivers: Man Giang, Thanh Y and Dai Do.
The statue is made from the cliff itself, so it has the color of natural rock and moss. More than 1,000 years ago, ancient people were able to build such monumental, large-scale and sophisticated works. It took people nearly a century to complete it. The statue simulates the Buddha sitting leisurely, smiling benevolently, hands resting on his knees and eyes slightly open, compassionately looking down at the river, very soulful and delicate.
The total height of the Leshan Giant Buddha statue is 71m. The head of the statue alone is 15 meters high, the shoulders are up to 28 meters wide, and the Buddha's eyebrows alone are up to 5.5 meters long. In particular, the Buddha's giant feet alone have enough room for 100 monks to sit on. Not only is it huge, but the statue also shows the talent of the ancient Chinese people in every detail. Buddha's hair has 1021 spiral curls and are meticulously and carefully arranged next to each other.
Ancient documents record that the construction of the statue began in 713 during the reign of Emperor Huyen Tong, led by a monk named Venerable Hai Thong. He was originally an old monk who practiced at Lang Van Pagoda in the mountain range of the same name.
According to legend, before Leshan Dai Buddha was built, the river water in this area flowed very fast, so shipwrecks often occurred. Witnessing the disastrous scenes, Venerable Hai Thong was very sad. The monk vowed to build a Buddha statue in the hope that the power of Buddhism would help the river water become more gentle, creating favorable conditions for ships to travel.
For more than 20 years, Venerable Hai Thong went everywhere to collect a sum of money to sculpt a Buddha statue. When the project was only half completed, the Venerable passed away and everything had to stop. 10 years later, Kiem Quynh, Kiem Quynh, the Western Sword Master, donated more than 200,000 taels of gold to continue construction. Because this is an extremely large-scale project, it requires a high amount of funding.
Thanks to his contributions in building the Buddha statue, the Temporal Porcelain Kiem Quynh was later appointed to the inauguration as Minister of the Household, the renovation work had to stop once again.
It was not until 788 during the reign of Duc Tong that the construction continued. Thanks to the efforts of three generations, after more than 90 years, the Leshan Great Buddha was finally completed.
Because this is the largest stone-carved Buddha statue, people call it the Leshan Great Buddha. Lang Van Pagoda was also renamed Dai Buddha Pagoda.
This relic welcomes up to 3 million visitors to come here for pilgrimage, sightseeing, and tourism and has become a place not to be missed when coming to Sichuan province - southern China. Not only do you come to admire the religious work with its amazing architecture, but this statue also contains many spiritual and thrilling stories that have been passed down to this day.
An interesting and strange thing that local people always tell to visitors from far away is that since the Leshan Giant Buddha statue appeared, shipwrecks in this area no longer happen.
Today, scientists believe that during the construction of this giant project, layers of rock were carved and removed in large quantities and deposited into the river. This causes the currents to change, thus making boat travel safer.
Not only that, it is believed that the Leshan Giant Buddha statue can express happy and sad emotions on its face when the situation changes.
In history, people have recorded 4 times the statue "shed tears", the eyes closed and the face changed color. The most recounted "Weeping Buddha" time was in 1976, when a terrible earthquake occurred in Duong Son town that claimed the lives of more than 242,000 people. At that time, the statue not only "closed its eyes and shed tears" but also had an angry face as if blaming the sky.
In 1994, the Leshan Great Buddha scenic relic site became a tourist attraction attracting millions of domestic and foreign tourists. On June 7 of this year, tourists on boats on the river said they saw the Buddha statue shedding tears. When the boat docked, they saw the statue's face relax as if smiling even though there were still two lines of tears. In 2002, a cloud covering the top of the Leshan Giant Buddha suddenly radiated a brilliant halo, spreading across Lang Van with a diameter of up to 300 meters.
No one has been able to explain the stories about the "tears" statue. Many people believe that the statue placed outdoors and exposed to thousands of years of rain and sun may not be able to retain its original shape. However, many people believe in the mystical and spiritual meanings of this religious work.
For the people of Sichuan in general and China in particular, the statue also carries great spiritual significance, about the compassion and joy of Buddhism, keeping sentient beings safe when moving across the river. Chinese people say that if you have the water of these three rivers sprinkled naturally on your body, it will bring good luck and fortune to you and your family. Therefore, this has also become a sacred destination for tourists. To this day, the Leshan Buddha statue has become an extremely famous tourist attraction in the most populous country in the world.
