ASS. Dr. Bui Hien died at 15:15 on May 11 at his home in Viet Tri City, Phu Tho Province. ASS. Dr. Bui Hien was born in 1935 in Vinh Chan commune, Ha Hoa district, Phu Tho province.
The ceremony of visiting Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hien will be held at 13:00 on May 12, the memorial and funeral ceremony will be held at 6:30 on May 13. He will be buried in his hometown of Vinh Chan, Ha Hoa, Phu Tho.Then he will be cremated in Ba Vi, Hanoi and buried in his hometown cemetery of Vinh Chan.
In 2017, he became known for his controversial proposal to improve the national script. Accordingly, the proposal to improve the national language is a personal question that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hien has been pursuing for a long time. This proposal was first published in Education and Times newspaper No. 72 on September 8, 1995.
At that time, there were many conflicting views on this improved word, even social networks at that time had many fierce controversies. Many people have extreme words, insulting Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hien.
Accordingly, the improved national script of the author Bui Hien is based on the cultural voice of Hanoi capital both in terms of basic phonemes and 6 standard tones, the principle that each letter only expresses one phoneme, and each phoneme has only one corresponding letter to express. The letter D will be removed from the current Vietnamese alphabet and some Latin letters will be added.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hien proposed the improvement towards the goal: unifying and simplifying part of the writing for documents and making it easier for foreigners and ethnic minorities to access Vietnamese writing.
According to Assoc. Prof. Hien, improving in this way will simplify the alphabet when from 38 letters to only 31, easy to grasp the rules and easy to remember. In addition, it also saves time, effort and materials in the process of creating documents on paper and on computers.
At the end of 2017, his proposal was made to the media and was hotly debated due to the differences in his improved writing style. The debate subsided when experts asserted that if there is an improvement in the type of writing that millions of people at home and abroad are using, it cannot simply be proposed by one individual.
When announcing each part of the research work proposing to improve the Vietnamese language, in the face of fierce objections, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hien still calmly thinks that this reaction is normal, especially when the project is not completed. He himself also shared: "If I suddenly look at the improved word, I also feel silly."
However, this scientist holds the view that although the managers have not yet applied any plan to improve the national script, his research from a scientific and personal perspective... is his right.
He also emphasized that he had spent more than 40 years researching this scientific work and experienced many difficulties, to get a complete document and he felt very satisfied. As for the comments that are not goodwill, even malicious, he said that it is normal because there will be people who understand, and there will be people who do not. He also considers his scientific research to be experimental, and anyone who likes it can use it.
Saying is doing, Assoc. Prof. Bui Hien continues to research so that the work of improving his national script becomes the most complete. In December 2017, he received a Copyright Registration Certificate from the Copyright Office (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) for the work Improving the national script.
In early 2018, he transferred the work of Tales of Kieu consisting of 3,254 verses to his improved writing and printed it into a book himself. At the end of 2018, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hien's grandson, Bui Tien (graduated from Hanoi University of Architecture) and a close friend gave his grandfather a 'Viet' conversion software, helping to convert literary or journalistic works into improved words after just a few steps.
Expressing his opinion on this suspicious work of Assoc. Prof. Bui Hien, teacher Nguyen Trong Binh from Can Tho shared: 'In fact, there is no research work that does not belong to one or two individuals?
Once Associate Professor Bui Hien has decided to make his work widely public, it is no longer his personal problem but a social problem. Because his proposal risks affecting the whole nation.
In addition, although Associate Professor Bui Hien does not use the state budget for research at present, it should also be remembered that Associate Professor Bui Hien always affirms that he is a scientist and he has been researching this work for 40 years.
That also means that the knowledge foundation for him as a scientist with the title of Associate Professor and Doctorate in the past 40 years is actually also from the State budget. Only a farmer who has worked in the field all his life does not owe the state's funds."
It can be seen that since Associate Professor Bui Hien's proposal to improve Vietnamese writing was announced until now, it has inadvertently caused division and division between his supporters and opponents.
During his lifetime, he was a Russian language teacher, a Russian language researcher. He used to be the Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Foreign Languages Education (now the University of Foreign Languages, Hanoi National University).
In 1953, he was sent to China to learn Russian. After 2 years of study, in 1955, he graduated from the University of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Russian in Beijing, China. Returning to Vietnam, he was assigned to be in charge of the Russian department of the newly established Foreign Language School in Hanoi. In 1967, Hanoi University of Foreign Language Education was established, Bui Hien was in charge of the Russian department of this school.
From 1969 to 1972, he worked as an associate doctoral student in Russian in the Soviet Union, where he defended his thesis with distinction at Moscow State University M.V. Lomonosov.
After that, he returned to the country to continue working at Hanoi University of Foreign Language Education. In 1974, he was appointed as Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Foreign Languages Education. Later, he was appointed as Deputy Director of the Institute of General Teaching Content and Methods of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences and held this position until his retirement in 1993.
During his decades of retirement and in the last years of his life, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hien still diligently reads, researches and is always enthusiastic about improving the national language. He wrote many articles such as "The role of the national language in the industrial revolution 4.0", "Handbook of the improved national language"...
