Recently, the trial of a group of young drivers who raced and hit a young gir.l who was stopped at a red light took place. The defendants received appropriate sentences for their rebellious behavior, which also served as a wake-up call for parents.
On the afternoon of April 22, after a day of trial, the People's Court of Hoan Kiem District (Hanoi) sentenced 24 defendants in the case of Violating regulations on road traffic and disturbing public order. These defendants are in the group of "speed demons" who caused the deat.h of a gir.l when stopping at a red light on Tran Hung Dao Street in November 2024.
The panel of judges determined that the defendantsâ actions posed a danger to society and caused grief and sorrow to the victimsâ families. Therefore, the defendants must receive sentences commensurate with their actions.
Regarding the sentence, the court sentenced defendant Nguyen Hong Nhung to 7 years in prison for violating regulations on road traffic participation and 18 months in prison for disturbing public order. In total, the court sentenced defendant Nguyen Hong Nhung to 8 years and 6 months in prison.
Defendant Nguyen Ta Minh Khang was sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in prison for Violating regulations on road traffic and 12 months in prison for Disturbing public order. In total, this defendant received 6 years and 6 months in prison.
Defendant Nguyen Phuong Anh was sentenced to 12 months in prison for disturbing public order. Together with the 28-month prison sentence in the previous case (tried by the People's Court of Hoan Kiem District), the court ordered Phuong Anh to serve 40 months in prison.
The remaining 21 defendants, aged 16-17, received sentences ranging from 5 to 7 months in prison. Many of them, who were detained, have completed their sentences and have been released by the court.
Previously, during the interrogation, defendant Nguyen Hong Nhung stated that on the night of November 2, 2024, she invited her friend Nguyen Phuong Anh to go out for a drink. Afterwards, the two of them went for a drive on some central streets of Hanoi, even though Nhung did not have a driver's license.
At dawn the next morning, when she saw a racing group, Nhung immediately "joined the group". While racing with the group, the defendant heard someone in the group shouting "police" so she increased the speed and ran away.
The female "speed demon" explained that she initially only intended to go for a walk and had no intention of participating in a racing group. However, after "joining the group" with many other cars, the defendant drove at high speed, honked continuously, ran red lights, swerved, and did not observe other vehicles. Nhung did not even know how fast she was driving in km/h.
Due to not paying attention, Nhung drove her motorbike into a collision with Ms. Q's motorbike (born in 1997, the person who passed away in the incident), causing Ms. Q. to fall onto the road. At that moment, Nguyen Ta Minh Khang, who was driving a motorbike following the group, crashed into Ms. Q., causing her to di.e on the spot. After the incident, the subjects left the scene.
After that, the authorities investigated, tracked down the suspects and initiated a case, prosecuting 24 defendants for "Violating regulations on road traffic" and "Disturbing public order". The indictment determined that the "speed demons" group was made up of 6 separate groups. At the time of the crime, the defendants were all over 16 years old.
The "speed demons" who commit errors are often teenagers who lack full awareness of the consequences of their actions. They are easily lured by temporary pleasures and foolish enticements without foreseeing the potential dangers. The lack of proper care and education from the family can push them down the wrong path, causing tragedies not only for themselves but also for the whole community.
Parents need to take a serious look at their role in educating their children about traffic safety. Equipping them with legal knowledge, safe driving skills, and most importantly, building an attitude of respect for the law, respect for their own lives and the lives of others is extremely important. Donât wait until heartbreaking incidents like this happen before we regret our indifference and laxity.
