In the house of the family of Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Dang Khai (29 years old, officer of the Police Department of Investigation of Crimes on Prohibited Substances, Quang Ninh Provincial Police) in Cao Xa village (Tran Cao town, Phu Cu district, Hung Yen province), a stream of people silently came to offer condolences. The atmosphere of mourning covered the whole small village, where everyone knew and loved the young, strong-willed and emotional police officer.
Mr. Tran Duc Quyet, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tran Cao town, said: Lieutenant Khai's parents are farmers, living in harmony and affection. Lieutenant Khai himself was obedient, polite, good at studying since childhood and was the pride of the whole village. In addition to class time, the young man also went to the fields to help his parents pull up seedlings and plant rice. Lieutenant Dang Khai is the eldest of two children. Major Khai's younger sister has just graduated from university and is working in Hanoi.
Mr. Quyet added that although he worked far from home, every time he returned home to visit his parents, Senior Lieutenant Khai often took the opportunity to visit and chat with his neighbors. Senior Lieutenant Khai lived a simple, friendly life, and was always ready to help anyone who needed help, so he was loved by the whole neighborhood. Therefore, when hearing the news that Senior Lieutenant Khai had died while on duty, everyone was shocked and saddened.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hanh (residing in Cao Xa village) shared that since last night, when they heard the news of Lieutenant Khai's sacrifice, the whole small village came without telling anyone to lend a hand, helping the family clean up and take care of his funeral.
"Khai was polite, affectionate, and responsible to his family and society. The whole neighborhood loved Khai like a grandchild in the family. Last night, hearing the news that Khai had died at a very young ag.e, before he had time to start a family, made everyone in our neighborhood feel sad. Just last weekend, Khai went back to his hometown and came to my house to play and promised me that when he returned, he would have more time to go fishing and have dinner with me. But...", Mr. Hanh choked up and said.
Not only the neighbors living next door to Lieutenant Khai's family, but also the neighbors next door came to help and encourage his family to overcome this great loss.
"Khai passed away while on a noble mission. Our hometown and village are always proud and will forever remember Khai's silent but meaningful contributions," said Ms. Tong Thi Loan (Tran Thuong village, Tran Cao town).
During the funeral, Mr. Nguyen Dang Khuong (father of Major Nguyen Dang Khai) did not talk to many people. In his wishes for his eldest son, there was no thought of the day he would have to preside over his son's funeral when he was only 30 years old.
Major Nguyen Dang Khai, an officer of the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department of Quang Ninh Province Police, was shot and kille.d while on duty to destroy an inter-provincial drug trafficking ring on the evening of April 17.
Mr. Khuong said his son graduated and started working in October 2018, and has been working in the police force for nearly 6 years now. A few months ago, following the arrangement and direction of streamlining the district police force, he was transferred to work at the Quang Ninh Provincial Police. The last time the family saw Major Khai was nearly half a month ago, when he came home on leave for the weekend. After that, as usual, he said goodbye to his family and went to his duty unit.
"I encouraged my son to go if he was busy, it was a government job," Mr. Khuong recounted his advice before his son left home to join the military. The nature of his job meant that he rarely got to go home. The only people at home were his wife, his daughter and his wife. At 10 p.m. on April 17, a phone call from Quang Ninh made Mr. Khuong feel like he was falling apart.
He dropped everything and immediately set off with his wife and some relatives. In his heart, the father prayed that the destination would be the emergency room so that the family would have some hope. But the news of Major Khai's sacrifice made everything collapse for him and his wife.
"My chil.d is gone, what should I do?", the man tried to hold back his tears.
Mrs. Phan Thi Huong (49 years old, mother of Major Nguyen Dang Khai) fainted repeatedly because of the sudden passing of her eldest son. Relatives and family members always had to stay by her bedside to take care of Mrs. Huong.
Trying to hold back her tears, Ms. Trinh Thi Hop (born 2004, girlfriend of Major Nguyen Dang Khai, currently a student at Ha Long University) said that the two have known each other and been together for several years. Both families have accepted the young couple Hop - Khai as their children and plan to get married when Ms. Hop finishes school.
"I've been busy lately, Khai is busy with work so we don't see each other often. Although we call each other every day, the last time we met was last week. At around 6pm last night (April 17), Khai called me but I didn't think this would be the last time we would hear each other's voices. When Khai's teammates called to inform me that he was injured, my ears were ringing but I still hoped that nothing bad could happen" - Ms. Hop choked up.
Busy preparing for his nephew's funeral, Mr. Nguyen Dang Khan (Major Khai's uncle) said that he lived next door and witnessed his nephew's growth. During his high school years, Nguyen Dang Khai was considered one of the "leading birds". His family encouraged him to take the police exam to train himself and protect the Fatherland. Later, he passed the People's Police Academy exam with a very high score.
Mr. Khan said his nephew once confided in him that he would study for a master's degree. He already had a girlfriend and planned to get married at the end of the year. "A few days ago, Khai came home and told me, 'Please help me at the end of the year.' But now everything is unfinished," Mr. Khan said, when recounting his nephew's plans to get married.
