The robbery of 24 taels of gold in Di Linh: The robber's 24-hour journey from attac.k to escape

On February 14, Lam Dong Provincial Police arrested Pham Thanh Chung (33 years old, residing in Hoa Ninh Commune, Di Linh District, Lam Dong Province) to investigate the act of robbery. Chung is the suspect in the robbery of a gold shop in Di Linh town on the afternoon of February 13.

After being arrested, Chung confessed that at around 8:00 a.m. on February 13, Chung rode his motorbike to have breakfast and then went to Dinh Trang Hoa commune. He saw a Wave motorbike parked on the side of the road, so he stole the license plate and put it in the trunk.

Chung then rode his motorbike to Hoa Ninh market (Di Linh district) to buy an orange shirt and a pair of black and white sandals. Chung returned to his home in Hoa Ninh commune, put on a different colored outfit, and rode his motorbike to Di Linh town.

When he arrived at the deserted tea garden, Chung changed into new clothes and a new stolen license plate on his car, leaving his own license plate at the base of a tree. Chung went to the market to buy an iron axe from a second-hand seller, hid it on his person, and went to the gold shop right in the new market area.

Entering the gold shop, Chung pretended to look at the gold, then suddenly used an axe he had prepared in advance to smash the glass case, grab a handful of gold and run away. Security camera footage recorded that at around 2:30 p.m. on February 13, Chung, wearing a helmet and a mask, entered the Nhu Ngoc Chau gold shop in Di Linh town (Di Linh district) and stood observing the jewelry in the display case. At that time, the shop had 2-3 customers.

Suddenly, Chung took out an axe hidden in his jacket, hit the display case many times, broke the glass, then reached in and grabbed the gold. A shopkeeper tried to stop him, but the robber swung the axe and ran out, jumped on a motorbike parked about 20 meters away from the scene, and escaped. People shouted, some threw bricks to stop him but failed.

After the robbery, Chung ran to a deserted road, took off his shirt, threw away the axe and continued running towards Bao Loc city on Highway 20.

When arriving at Dai Binh intersection in Bao Loc city, Chung turned towards Highway 55 to Loc Thanh commune and then returned to Di Linh district to change the clothes he wore that morning and change his license plate number.

Chung returned home and hid all the stolen gold in a can of powdered milk and buried it in the garden. At 9:00 p.m. on February 13, Chung changed clothes, took 4 gold necklaces, and took a bus to Bien Hoa City for medical examination.

After spending the night in Bien Hoa City, Chung invited a friend to have breakfast, then asked him to take him to the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic Hospital for a medical examination. On the way, Chung asked his friend to stop by and sell a gold necklace for 27 million VND. In addition, Chung also gave this friend 3 necklaces to take home and keep.

After the medical examination, Chung took a ride-hailing car from Ho Chi Minh City back to Bien Hoa City and was arrested by detectives from the Criminal Police Department of Lam Dong Province Police. Chung told the police that at the end of 2024, he lost about 500 million VND playing online Sic Bo. Because he had no way to recover, Chung came up with the idea of robbing a gold shop to pay off his debt. Initial information showed that Pham Thanh Chung had robbed about 24 taels of gold, worth about 1.4 billion VND.

The leader of the Criminal Police Department of Lam Dong Provincial Police said: Immediately after the robbery, Colonel Truong Minh Duong - Director of Lam Dong Provincial Police directly went to the scene to direct the professional force to solve the case. From the initial assessment and direction of Colonel Truong Minh Duong and the leader of Lam Dong Provincial Police, the Criminal Police force of the Provincial Police, Di Linh District Police and other localities deployed forces to pursue in the right direction. Thanks to that, the investigation agency quickly identified and arrested this subject less than 24 hours after committing the robbery.

According to the leader of the Criminal Police Department of the Provincial Police, in Vietnam in general and Lam Dong province in particular, the reckless subjects who commit robberies related to gold shops and banks are all arrested quickly after committing the crime. Therefore, with the above-mentioned reckless robbery crimes, sooner or later the subjects will not have a chance to escape.
