3-month-old girl abused: Race against time to save victim's life
On June 22, the National Children's Hospital received a special patient in critical condition: a 3-month-old girl was admitted with a serious condition in her private area. Immediately, the medical team urgently examined and organized an interdisciplinary consultation, including Emergency, Urology, Anesthesia and Resuscitation. The results were truly heartbreaking, the doctors clearly determined that the child had been abused.
That fateful night, the child was taken to the operating room for emergency surgery. During the surgery, doctors were shocked to discover that the childâs hymen was torn and her vagina was damaged by about 1.5 cm. Fortunately, these injuries had not affected the rectum â a key factor in minimizing long-term complications.
The surgical team quickly performed reconstruction of the child's vagina and perineum, making every effort to repair the severe injuries. After the stressful surgery, the patient was transferred to the Department of Urology for further monitoring and special treatment. Thanks to timely intervention and intensive care, after only two days, the girl's health condition stabilized, she had no fever, and was fortunately discharged from the hospital.
Synchronized involvement: medical, psychological and legal
As soon as the heartbreaking incident was discovered, the Child Protection Department of the National Children's Hospital immediately took action. Under the direction of Dr. Cao Viet Tung - Deputy Director of the Hospital and Head of the Child Protection Department, a comprehensive support plan was implemented for both mother and child throughout the treatment process. Doctors, nurses, psychologists and social workers worked closely with the authorities to ensure that the child received optimal medical care, timely psychological support and the best legal protection.
According to information from the authorities, the male involved in the incident was quickly arrested. He confessed to the child abuse and will be strictly dealt with according to the law. In particular, the child's mother has also been thoroughly instructed on measures to protect the child, identify risks and prevent re-abuse after returning to normal life. This shows concern not only for physical treatment but also for long-term protection for the child's future.
Heartbreaking reality: Child abuse â the risk from acquaintances
The National Children's Hospital also issued an urgent warning: currently, all children are at risk of sexual abuse, regardless of gender, age or living conditions. Alarming studies show that the majority of perpetrators are male, and the majority of abuses occur by people known to the victims, such as relatives, family friends, neighbors, and even blood relatives. This makes the work of preventing and protecting children more complicated and urgent than ever.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, in 2023, the country recorded 2,498 cases of child abuse. In 2024, the National Children's Hospital alone received and treated 66 abused children, of which 65.1% were physically abused, 28.8% were sexually abused and 6.1% were neglected. These figures are clear evidence of the alarming situation that is taking place.
Severe consequences & call for community cooperation
One of the most serious problems is that when children are abused, they often do not dare to report the incident because of fear, guilt or intimidation. Children often have to silently endure mental pain for months, even years.
Violent and abusive behavior towards children often leaves serious consequences both physically and psychologically, seriously affecting the comprehensive development of children. Many studies show that injuries caused by abuse can affect the brain, impairing the ability to think, learn and develop social skills. Abused children are at high risk of problems such as long-term disability, depression, psychological disorders, difficulties in communication and establishing relationships. In the long term, these injuries not only affect children's personal lives but also cause consequences for society, from the decline in the quality of human resources to increased costs in healthcare, law and social security.
Urgent Alert for Parents
Parents and caregivers need to be extremely vigilant, as the risk of child abuse can come from anyone, even close acquaintances. Educate your children about "private areas" of the body, teach them to say "no" to unwanted touching, and encourage them to share anything unusual. Always listening, trusting, and protecting your children is the top priority to prevent unfortunate tragedies.
