While the conflict between ADOR company and parent group HYBE tends to become increasingly tense, NewJeans' reputation and appeal remain undiminished. Before the comeback, the group was discussed because of suspicions of plagiarism.
Specifically, to warm up for their upcoming comeback, NewJeans released the MV Bubble gum on April 26. This is the time when the fight between "mother" Min Hee Jin and the HYBE group is reaching its peak. That's why the re-appearance of NewJeans also receives more attention. The MV is full of school youth with a gentle background music, completely different from previous hits, making fans extremely excited.
However, with just a few days left before NewJeans officially comeback with the single How sweet, the group was suddenly accused of plagiarism. Accordingly, Bubble gum is said to be similar to the song Easier said than done by the British jazz funk group - Shakatak. Shakatak's account also acknowledged the similarities between the two songs and will conduct further research.
Besides, a YouTuber made a comparison clip between Easier said than done and Bubble gum with the results showing that the chord progressions are completely different. Finally, this YouTuber concluded that NewJeans' song was not plagiarized. This person also said that the reason the plagiarism question arose was because the person who raised the issue mashed up two songs to make them the same. It's possible that Bubble Gum used a sample from Easier said than done, but neither the copyright website nor the MV's credits show that NewJeans' song registered to take a sample from its predecessor. However, this is just the personal opinion of a YouTuber and both sides have not come to an official conclusion, so the case still receives a lot of attention.
Easier said than done is a big hit by Shakatak released in 1981. After many member changes, this British group is still active until now.
Previously, when Bubble Gum was released, Vietnamese music fans also thought that the spoken part of this song was quite similar to the song "Do you guess" that Bich Phuong released in 2021. However, some opinions argued that this is a familiar singing style of many previous songs, not just Do you guess or Bubble gum.
Not only were they cleared of the counterfeiting case, fans also discovered that NewJeans was actually the victim of similar incidents as above.
Specifically, two members of the NewJeans crew were upset that ILLIT's choreography in the song "Lucky Girl Syndrome" was similar to the moves NewJeans once performed for an advertisement.
On her personal page, Kim Eun Ju - Performance Director of NewJeans wrote: "Oh? Is it true? Even choreography for advertising? I've been holding back for a long time... We can call this a betrayal." Is it a coincidence? Sure, because there will be similarities. However, usually, when people refer to it, they at least change it a bit to make it right. But this is copying again".
BLACK.Q - another Performance Director who worked with NewJeans also expressed his dissatisfaction: "I've been suppressing thoughts like 'no way, no way' all this time, but to the point of copying it." The choreography for commercials is unbelievable. Surely it's not easy to blatantly appropriate someone's hard work..."
Previously, ILLIT was constantly accused of imitating the choreography of NewJeans hits such as "Cookie", "Hype Boy" and "Super Shy". CEO Min Hee Jin once reported to HYBE about the suspicion of copying but was dismissed by the group. During the press conference on April 25, she said she was not criticizing ILLIT but was targeting the adults who were stealing the formula for producing the group.
Returning to NewJeans, despite being caught up in controversy before their comeback, the group is still quietly setting many new records.
On May 14, management company ADOR announced that tickets for the first two fan-meetings (fan meetings) of New Jeans (Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, Hyein) in Japan - Bunnies Camp 2024 - will be available. held at the Tokyo Dome Stadium, on June 26-27, was sold out.
New Jeans entered Tokyo Dome after 1 year and 11 months since their debut - the shortest record for a foreign artist. It's very rare for a group that hasn't officially debuted in Japan to fill up Tokyo Dome so quickly.
Above all, Tokyo Dome is considered the "concert cathedral" that many international artists desire, but NewJeans even sold out 2 shows here with just one fan meeting event.
