On July 5 and 6, two concert nights as part of BLACKPINK 's DEADLINE Tour officially took place at Goyang Stadium, Korea. This event marked the return of the quartet after 2 years of "hibernation".
"Dead Sea" in the stands and the audience's confusing reaction
This comeback, BLACKPINK brought a setlist of 27 performances, lasting more than 2 hours with vibrant music, eye-catching lights and the members' energetic performances. However, some videos recorded at the concert left many points worth mentioning, especially the "sea of death" scene in the stands.
Specifically, while BLACKPINK performed the hit " Pretty Savage " - a song with an extremely "fighting" rhythm and tempo, even remixed to create a climax - the audience's reaction was not as expected. Many videos showed that most of the fans sat "frozen" in one place, either holding their phones to film or holding lightsticks. More notably, viewers almost did not hear the cheers or loud fan chants as is often seen at Kpop concerts.
Only when the four girls took the initiative to call on the audience to stir up the stage did a small number of participants respond, but the overall atmosphere was still described as "incomprehensibly gloomy", like a "dead sea" in complete contrast to the energy on stage.
Cultural differences or underlying causes?
A netizen who attended the concert shared his observation that although the concert was held in Korea, about 70% of the audience came from China. This person commented that this could be due to the difference in "idol-chasing" culture between countries.
Accordingly, many fans from the country of a billion people often focus on enjoying the concert more quietly: no screaming, no singing along, and no dancing too much. Instead, they prioritize filming and taking photos to preserve the moment.
Another netizen shared the "embarrassed" experience of trying to "go all out" and sing along to every song but was looked at with "judgmental" eyes by Chinese fans. Although admitting that each person has their own preferences and personalities, acting rather indifferent like that was considered to "pull the mood" of the entire seating area, affecting the general atmosphere.
As the K-pop industry continues to expand globally, cultural differences in how fans express their admiration are a factor worth considering. While fans in Korea and many Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, are often known for their synchronized fan chants, enthusiastic cheers, and dancing to the music, other groups of audiences choose to enjoy concerts in a more subdued way, focusing on filming or simply feeling the music without expressing too much outwardly. This can lead to misunderstandings or a sense of disconnect between artists and audiences in some regions.
Missing the explosive atmosphere in Vietnam and expectations for the new tour
In the comments section of the videos about the "dead sea", many Vietnamese netizens expressed their wish that the culture of "partying" when "following idols" of our country will "reach the international level" so that artists and fans from other countries can experience the hot atmosphere of Vietnamese fans. Many people even "dropped links" or "released" videos recording two nights of Born Pink Tour from 2 years ago at My Dinh Stadium (Hanoi) as evidence.
Looking back to the summer of 2023, BLACKPINK really "shook up" all fronts in Vietnam when they set foot in Hanoi as part of the Born Pink Tour. That time was not only an unforgettable memory for the V-BLINK community but also an important milestone, marking a strong transformation of the Vietnamese concert market, creating the premise for a series of domestic and foreign concerts to be bustling in the past year.
After two concerts in Korea to kick off the DEADLINE Tour, Vietnamese fans are eagerly waiting for YG Entertainment to announce that they will expand the scope of the BLACKPINK tour. And who knows, with the heat and enthusiasm of V-BLINKs, Vietnam will once again be on the list of places the group will visit next year, bringing explosive shows, erasing all the "dead sea" images on the stage.
