The story of a Chinese man who sold his kidney just to buy a smartphone 10 years ago is still stirring up public opinion.
In 2011, smartphones began to gain popularity in China. Touch screen phones are gradually replacing button phones. Smartphones have become a favorite item of young people, but they are too expensive. Ten years ago, an iPhone 4S cost more than 4,000 yuan.
That year, 17-year-old Vuong Thuong Kun also aspired to own an Apple phone, but his family did not allow it. It is known that his parents are just ordinary workers with a meager salary. However, Vuong Thuong Con did not know how to live frugally and chase after them. He came home many times, demanding that his parents buy an iPhone for him, but really, the cost of a smartphone was beyond the means of Mr. and Mrs. Wang.
Out of nowhere, Vuong Thuong Kun asked his friends how to earn money and was introduced to some part-time jobs during the summer vacation such as handing out flyers, helping with errands, etc. After a while, Vuong felt a way to earn money. This money is too slow, and it doesn't accumulate much.
One day, while surfing the Internet, this male student read an advertisement for the sale of a kidney. Without thinking much, he immediately contacted an organ collector named Ha Vi. This name said, Vuong can earn 20,000 yuan (69 million) when selling organs. If his kidneys are good, he will pay Wang a few thousand more yuan.
This person also deceived Vuong Thuong Con that cutting a kidney would not affect anything and Vuong was still alive and well. Ha Vi also cited many people still living well with a kidney to make Vuong fall in love. The impulsive, shallow youth made the 17-year-old male student falsely believe the words of the organ dealer.
At that time, the student thought simply: "One kidney is enough, why do I need another kidney? Why not sell it to make money?".
In April 2011, Ha Wei's team brought Vuong Thuong Kun from Anhui province to Samzhou city (Hunan province) to perform a 10-hour underground surgery. It is known that Vuong's right kidney was paid up to 200,000 yuan (about 709 million dong), but Ha Wei only gave him 20,000 yuan. The rest he divided among himself, the surgeon, and other brokers.
Immediately after receiving the money, Vuong Thuong Kun was overjoyed and rushed to buy iPhone 4 and iPad 2. During the whole process of Vuong selling his kidney, his parents did not know anything.
After returning to Anhui, Wang Shangkun went back to school as usual. At first, the 17-year-old male student did not feel anything unusual. But later, Wang's body gradually became unstable. In class, Vuong is often sleepy, sluggish all day, has no energy to do anything. In the end, he had to leave school, bedridden at home.
Under constant questioning from his parents, Vuong confessed to selling his kidney. This news was like lightning hitting the ears of Mr. and Mrs. Vuong. Both immediately took their son to the hospital to be checked and discovered that his son only had one left kidney. Even more frightening, due to underground surgery, unsafe and unsanitary conditions, the incision was infected and affected the left kidney.
Vuong's remaining kidney has only a quarter of its normal function. In desperation, Mr and Mrs. Wang alerted the police and brought all those involved to court. Nine people involved in illegal trade were arrested, five of them were charged with intentional injury and organ trafficking. And Vuong's family was compensated 1.47 million yuan (about 5.2 billion dong).
However, that amount of money could not compensate for the health of Vuong Thuong Con. Due to a kidney infection, Vuong became a 3rd degree disabled person. Kidney function was severely damaged, so for the rest of his life, this male student could only lie on a hospital bed.
10 years have passed, Vuong Thuong Con's life is now extremely tragic. From a good-looking young man, 1m91 tall, Vuong is now very thin, weighing only about 45kg. Because of his poor health, that year, Vuong had to drop out of school, depend on his family's care and undergo regular dialysis, because his kidneys could not perform this function. The amount of compensation in the past is also exhausted because the cost of each dialysis is too expensive.
Vuong's life, work and marriage were all seriously affected, because Vuong could not live independently as an adult. Only because of a temporary vanity, Vuong harmed himself and his family.
10 years have passed, but Vuong's story is still the topic of discussion on social networks whenever the new iPhone "season" comes. Each article attracts hundreds of millions of reads and thousands of comments. In addition to sympathetic comments, share with Wang and family. Many see Wang's story as a testament to flashy pragmatism.
