The Florida Department of Emergency Management has ordered mandatory evacuations for 13 counties and voluntary evacuations for seven others. According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), Milton is one of the most destructive storms.
By the evening of October 9 or early morning of October 10 (local time), the eye of the storm is expected to make landfall in the Tampa Bay area of Florida and move east-northeast, passing through Florida. According to Reuters, Florida residents have only one last day to evacuate or take shelter before Hurricane Milton, a powerful Category 5 storm, makes landfall.
More than 1 million people living along Floridaâs coastal cities were ordered to evacuate, causing many highways and gas stations to be clogged and running out of fuel. GasBuddy.com analyst Patrick De Haan said that as people rushed to get out of danger, gasoline demand spiked, adding to the chaos in a region still recovering from Hurricane Helene, which struck less than two weeks ago.
US President Joe Biden and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor warned residents in the area to evacuate to a safe location outside or risk losing their lives. Michael Tylenda, who was visiting his son in the Tampa Bay area, said: "A lot of people are stubborn about staying in their homes and they end up drowning. I don't think it's worth it. You know, houses can be rebuilt, furniture can be replaced. So you better get out of town as soon as possible."
The NHC said Milton had maximum sustained winds of 160 mph, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. Wind speeds may ease in the coming days, making Milton a weaker storm, but the storm is still growing in size, putting many coastal areas at risk.
In the coastal city of Treasure Island, all residents tried to evacuate and the streets were empty before Hurricane Milton made landfall. Treasure Island Mayor Tyler Payne was grateful that residents complied with the government's request to minimize human loss.
According to an update at 5 a.m. on October 9 (local time) from the US National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Milton is located about 500 km southwest of Tampa and moving northeast at a speed of 22 km/h.
"The center of Hurricane Milton is forecast to move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico on October 9, making landfall along the west-central coast of Florida tonight or early tomorrow morning. The storm will then move off the east coast of Florida, crossing the western Atlantic Ocean in the afternoon," the NHC said.
Several tornado warnings have been issued for parts of south Florida and more are expected throughout the day, as the potential for severe weather increases across the peninsula.
With winds of up to 100 mph (160 km/h), officials in Tampa, Florida, have suspended emergency services. "We have suspended all emergency services because it is too dangerous to have emergency responders out on the streets at this time," said Tampa Police Chief Barbara Tripp, noting that at least 400,000 people in the city are without power. About three hours after making landfall, Milton was still "bringing heavy rain and strong winds to parts of central Florida," the National Hurricane Center said, according to CNN.
A flooding emergency remains in place in the Tampa Bay area, with heavy rain expected to continue for several hours. Dangerous winds of more than 100 mph were recorded Wednesday night around Tampa and other parts of west-central Florida near where Milton made landfall, meteorologist Brandon Millier said.
