In recent days, social networks have been in turmoil over a series of scandals involving streamer ViruSs (Dang Tien Hoang), hotgirl Ngoc Kem (ViruSs's ex-girlfriend) and rapper Phao.
The incident began when Ngoc Kem shared a video hinting at being mistreated in her previous relationship. Although she did not directly mention ViruSs's name, many people quickly speculated that she was referring to him. Shortly after, Phao - ViruSs's current girlfriend - also responded, causing the conflict to escalate.
Not stopping at personal arguments, ViruSs continuously livestreamed about the incident, turned on the mode that only paid subscribers could comment and earned hundreds of millions of dong after just a few broadcasts. This raised suspicions that he intentionally "prolonged the drama" for personal gain. However, unusual signs showed that this was not just a personal conflict but could be a dirty media campaign to take advantage of public attention.
During live sessions, ViruSs turned on the comment restriction feature, only registered members could participate in the discussion. As of 8:30 a.m. on March 30, the TikTok platform counted 635 subscribers to ViruSs's channel community with an average fee of 130,000 VND/month to read, comment, reply or enjoy other privileges.
ViruSs's estimated revenue from the community is more than 82 million VND. According to TikTok's policy, after deducting fees, the platform will share 50% of the remaining revenue with content creators. With the above number of subscribers, the channel owner can receive more than 1,330 USD/month (equivalent to more than 34 million VND).
Speaking to the media, Lawyer Dang Van Cuong said that it is time to strictly control the behavior of those who want to become famous by any means, regardless of social networks.
According to Mr. Cuong, if in the past, traditionally famous people were those who contributed to the community for a very long time, affirmed their name and reputation through useful work for the community, people with special talents, fame often started from admiration and real value of contribution in society.
Nowadays, many people are famous not because of their talent, beauty or great contributions to the community, but because they are famous through algorithms, trends, and even through swearin.g, fightin.g, and expressing their unique views and thoughts on social networks.
"Many people, in order to attract followers on social media platforms, are willing to create drama and even make controversial statements and use offensive language. Some people are willing to engage in deviant behavior on social media to attract interactions, serve business or advertising purposes..." said Mr. Cuong.
According to lawyer Cuong, Vietnamese law is increasingly expanding and ensuring citizens' democratic freedoms, including freedom of speech, freedom of access to information, use of electronic means, telecommunications networks, and the internet in work and entertainment life.
According to the lawyer, expressing one's views, attitudes and opinions on social and legal issues is not prohibited, and even "arguing" to clarify personal conflicts between parties on social networks is not prohibited by law.
However, the freedom of subjects also has its limits to avoid the exercise of freedom of one subject that can harm the rights of another subject, or affect public order and safety.
According to the lawyer, if there is an intentional act of creating a scandal to become famous, attract attention or for personal gain, it is highly condemnable. The authorities can step in to clarify the ridiculous content on the Internet to consider handling it according to regulations.
