Nghe An is struggling after the flood, villages are devastated, traffic is cut off. Hundreds of relief vehicles overcome difficulties to reach the flood center, bringing human warmth to people in the highlands.
In recent days, the whole country has been moved to witness the image of hundreds of relief vehicles following each other along National Highway 7, going up to the Western region of Nghe An, carrying goods and sentiments from the people of the whole country to the people in the flooded areas. Inside the flood zone, where Lau village - Tuong Duong was isolated for many days, relief teams crossed the raging waters, approached and supported the people in the most difficult days.
The historic flood on July 22 left many areas in Nghe An isolated, with Tam Quang commune, Tuong Duong district being the most severely affected. In just one night, three important bridges, including Cua Rao suspension bridge, Ban Chan bridge and Ban Lau bridge, were completely washed away, leaving 21 out of 26 villages in the commune isolated.
In particular, Lau village - one of the poorest villages in the commune - was completely isolated. More than 80/94 households here were submerged in floodwaters, many houses were submerged deeper than the roofs. With no electricity, no phone signal, no access to roads, people could only survive with what was left. "My husband and I did not have time to salvage anything, the rice was all moldy, most of the chickens and ducks were gone. For the past few days, we have been living on instant noodles and spring water," Ms. Kha Thi Lien, a resident of Lau village, emotionally shared.
On the morning of July 26, the first rays of hope appeared when the inflatable boat team of the PVC Vietnam Off-Road Truck Club from Hanoi traveled nearly 400km to Tuong Duong. Specialized boats carrying officials, electricity workers and relief goods weaved through the still-turbid water to reach Lau village, bringing food, medicine and spiritual support to the people after many days of waiting.
Local authorities quickly coordinated to establish on-site working groups to help people clear mud, dry their belongings, survey the damage and come up with plans to stabilize their lives. Electricity officials went to the scene to survey and restore the power line to restore power to the village.
At the same time, on Highway 7, convoys of relief vehicles from all over the country were also pouring into the western region of Nghe An. At noon on July 26, a touching scene occurred when vehicles loaded with goods lined up for kilometers, moving slowly through landslide-prone, narrow roads that could only fit one vehicle.
"Even though we had to wait for hours, everyone was patient. Each person had a hand, and when the car got stuck, everyone pushed and pulled together. No one gave up because there were people waiting above," a member of the volunteer group from Thanh Hoa shared.
People on both sides of the road rushed out to support the convoy, providing drinking water and snacks. Bundles of vegetables, boxes of noodles, water bottles, bags of rice... were passed from hand to hand to the highland communes such as Tam Quang, Tam Thai, Yen Tinh - where supplies were most needed. Despite the dangerous road, the atmosphere on each vehicle was still bustling, full of determination and affection.
Each trip is a story. There are groups of young people collecting their salaries to support, groups from private businesses, and even trips carrying gifts from people in the lowlands to people in the highlands. All have the same purpose: to share difficulties and support people who are struggling to overcome the consequences of natural disasters.
In Lau village, when the first relief goods were brought in, people burst into tears. "We have been living in fear for the past few days. Now that we see our comrades coming, seeing rice, medicine, and people asking us questions, we feel like we have been saved again," said Kha Van Hung, a resident, in tears.
The flood has receded, but the consequences are still severe. Hundreds of households have lost all their property and means of production, and their lives have been turned upside down. However, in times of trouble, humanity shines like a guiding light. Relief convoys are still following each other, crossing slippery roads, overcoming traffic jams, carrying love without borders.
Relief for the flooded areas of Nghe An is not only a practical action but also a symbol of national solidarity. From the boats reaching isolated villages, to the long lines of vehicles lining up on Highway 7, all are proof that Vietnam leaves no one behind â especially in times of trouble.
