Nghe An is facing a high risk of continued flash floods and landslides due to heavy rain. It is forecasted that on July 25, the mountainous areas in the west of the province will have moderate rain, with some places experiencing heavy rain and thunderstorms. The complex weather situation requires localities to be vigilant.
On July 25, the flood situation in Nghe An was extremely complicated, turning many areas into "vast seas of water" and causing heavy damage. The Lam River and upstream flows rose "too quickly", flooding many residential areas in Do Luong, Bich Hao, Tan An communes and downstream districts. Hundreds of houses were deeply flooded, many villages were isolated, and the number of casualties continued to rise, with at least 4 people tragically killed. Nghe An province is "struggling" to cope, functional forces are "crossing the flood" day and night to provide emergency relief, bringing dozens of tons of essential goods to people in the affected areas.
In Do Luong commune, Mr. Tran Van Son, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said that since the evening of July 23, the government has "mobilized all police, military, and village chief forces" to organize the evacuation of people from flooded areas. "The Lam River water level rose too quickly, we organized to move people living outside the dike to a safe place, and at the same time helped them clean up their property and crops," Mr. Son said urgently.
The two most flooded areas in Do Luong are Hamlet 1 and Trang Son Hamlet. Here, the water has risen more than half the walls of houses, in some places up to the windows, almost submerging the entire population. "The water rose too quickly, luckily the authorities helped evacuate in time," Nguyen Van Hai, a resident of Trang Son Hamlet, shared in fear. Hamlet 1 and Trang Son have 43 households outside the dike, areas that are "familiar" with annual flooding. Although the water has begun to slow down, many houses are still flooded more than 1.5m deep, causing serious damage.
The situation in Bich Hao commune is no less tragic. In Thanh Lam hamlet 1, the rapidly rising floodwaters have completely isolated 229 households because the only road leading to the hamlet is deeply flooded, making it impassable. "The water is now up to the chest, and people do not have boats, so no one can leave the hamlet," said Nguyen Khanh Thanh, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee. Of these, 35 households are at high risk of flooding. The disaster has also spread to agriculture, with the entire commune having 666 hectares of summer-autumn rice, of which more than 400 hectares have been submerged in water, with a high risk of total loss.
Not only Bich Hao and Do Luong communes, some low-lying areas of Tan An commune are also partially flooded, many inter-hamlet roads are impassable, separating residential areas. According to local authorities, the flood is due to water from upstream after many days of continuous heavy rain. The water of Hieu river is also rising rapidly, forcing the authorities of the communes to urgently evacuate households in dangerous areas. In other downstream communes such as Nam Dan and Hung Nguyen, Lam river water has also flooded the fields, many rice fields are submerged in water, the risk of total loss is present if the heavy rain continues.
The flood situation in Nghe An on July 25 was complicated, especially in the western mountainous districts. By 10am the same day, three communes, Huu Kiem, Nhon Mai, and Muong Tip, with nearly 24,000 people, were completely isolated. Thirteen other communes were also partially isolated, with traffic severely disrupted.
In response to the emergency, 2,011 households have been evacuated from the dangerous landslide area, including 13 households in Luong Minh commune who have lost their homes completely. Preliminary statistics show that Nghe An has recorded 4 deaths, 1 missing and 4 injuries. More than 1,200 houses have been damaged, many collapsed or swept away. Transport infrastructure, schools, government offices and agricultural production have also suffered heavy damage.
The functional forces have urgently responded. The Provincial Military Command mobilized 6,636 officers and soldiers. The Ministry of National Defense dispatched 2 helicopter crews to urgently supply 24 tons of goods to the isolated area. Nghe An Provincial Police also mobilized nearly 5,000 officers and soldiers with supporting equipment. The Vietnam Fatherland Front of Nghe An Province has received more than 22 billion VND in support, demonstrating the spirit of "mutual love". The forces are still making maximum efforts to minimize damage and ensure safety for the people.
