Car crash into river in Nam Dinh: Determining cause, relationship of 7 deaths

The initial cause of the particularly serious traffic accident that left 9 people injured and dead in Nam Dinh has been revealed. It was because the driver swerved, crashed into the guardrail, and plunged into the river.

According to a source from Tuoi Tre Online, the Traffic Police Department of Nam Dinh Province has just sent an initial report to the authorities about the car crash that killed 7 people on Highway 21 on the afternoon of January 30.

According to initial information, at around 3:00 p.m. on January 30, 2025, at Km153 500 National Highway 21 in Nam Van Ward, Nam Dinh City, Nam Dinh Province, Ms. NTD (born in 1964, residing in Dien Bien Ward, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi) drove a 7-seat car with license plate 30G-156.xx in the direction of Co Le to Nam Dinh City.

At that time, the car was carrying 9 people. When arriving at the scene, the car plunged into a ditch along the national highway. Seeing the car plunge into the ditch, almost sinking, some people present quickly jumped into the water in the hope of saving people, but the car doors were locked, hammers and hard objects were used to break the glass but it was very difficult. When the car was pulled out of the ditch, people were able to break the glass, inside many people had no signs of life.

The consequences caused 7 people to die at the scene, including: Mrs. NTD; Mr. N.D.C (born in 1956, Mrs. D's husband); Ms. NNA (born in 1989, Mrs. D's daughter); TNMK (born in 2017, Ms. A's daughter); Mr. NVT (born in 1986, residing in Thanh Oai, Hanoi); Ms. D. (born in 1991, Mr. T's wife) and NQM (born in 2023, address unknown).

Two injured victims were taken to the hospital for emergency treatment: Ms. NNQ (born in 1991, daughter of Ms. D) and her nephew NND (a 6th grade student in Hanoi). The initial cause was said to be that while driving a 7-seat car on the road, the driver turned right, crashed into the guardrail and plunged into the ditch.

Immediately upon receiving the information, the Ministry of Public Security directed the professional unit to coordinate with Nam Dinh Provincial Police to urgently coordinate with functional units to organize rescue work and urgently investigate to clarify the incident.

It is known that Ms. D. has a class B1 driver's license issued by the Hanoi Department of Transport and is valid until November 30, 2030. The car with license plate 30G-156.xx, 7 seats, first registered on December 30, 2019, has an inspection period until December 10, 2025.

VNA reported that the river in the area has a fairly high water level because the locality is taking water into the fields to serve the spring rice planting. National Highway 21 is the main road connecting Nam Dinh city to coastal districts of Nam Dinh province, so the traffic volume is very heavy. The authorities have diverted traffic from a distance to ensure that traffic is not congested.

According to VietnamNet, this morning (January 31), the two survivors of the car accident in Nam Dinh are in stable condition. Of these, NND still needs antibiotic treatment due to water in the lungs. Meanwhile, NNQ returned to Hanoi last night (January 30).

Funeral arrangements for the victims of the particularly serious car accident are being urgently arranged by the families. Ms. Pham Thi Nguyet, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Giao Thuy town, Giao Thuy district, told Dan Viet that all the victims were relatives in the family.

On the morning of January 30, Ms. NTD, her husband, Mr. N.D.C, and their children returned to their hometown to celebrate Tet and visit relatives. In the afternoon of the same day, in addition to Ms. D.'s family, there were 4 other relatives traveling together in the same car back to Hanoi. Then they had a serious accident.

The three victims were brought back to their hometown in Giao Thuy town for burial, including Mr. NVT, Ms. D. (Mr. T's wife), and NQM (Mr. T's and Ms. D's child). The victims' families performed the funeral rites and then brought them to San Rong cemetery for burial. Mr. T. called Ms. NTD (driver) "aunt".

The remaining victims of the accident, Ms. NTD, Mr. N.D.C, their daughter and grandchild, were brought back to Hanoi for funerals. The cause of the accident is still being investigated by the authorities.
