While doctors and nurses were trying to treat a case of anaphylactic shoc.k, the patient's relatives continuously cried, scolded loudly and rudely, and even 'physically impacted' a medical staff member, hindering the emergency process.
Shared on social networks, the 3-minute clip recording the emergency treatment of a patient at Thanh Ba District Medical Center (Phu Tho) quickly received public attention.
According to the clip, at this time, doctors were treating a chil.d who was in anaphylactic shoc.k after taking antibiotics. Meanwhile, family members stood around screaming and using harsh words towards the doctors and nurses. A male nurse was even 'hit' in the stomach by someone.
Watching the clip that was more than 3 minutes long, Dr. Duong Minh Tuan shared some bitter and noticeable lines on his personal page: "A patient was critically ill with anaphylaxis after an antibiotic injection. Let's not discuss right or wrong... When medical staff were putting all their efforts into emergency treatment. In the midst of that life-and-death situation, the patient's family members came in and out chaotically, screaming, using harsh words, even pushing and harassing while medical staff were performing CPR to save the person.
You are 'impacting' the only person who is trying to keep your loved one alive. You are tapping the artificial heart that is maintaining every second to keep the patient alive. You are slowing down every dose of adrenaline that is holding on to life. You are not saving anyone by saying bad words. You are not saving anyone by pushing and shoving the doctor in the middle of a life-threatening emergency...
Panic does not give you the right to sabotage all rescue efforts. Grief does not give you the right to turn medical staff into victims of anger.
My colleagues... I saw you in that video, your hands shaking with stress, both fightin.g the patient's crisis and enduring threats from the patient's family. Yet none of you left. None of you left the patient for even a single step. You did what not everyone has the courage to do: "Stay, fight for life, even when insulted, even 'physically impacted'".
Speaking to reporters on the afternoon of April 27, Dr. Cao Viet Hung, Deputy Director of Thanh Ba District Medical Center, confirmed that the situation in the clip occurred at the Department of Surgery of this unit 2 days ago. The patient was a 12-year-old bo.y who had a traffic acciden.t and was brought to the center with a headache, dizziness, nausea, and bruises on his forehead, limbs, etc.
Brain CT scan showed that the chil.d had a cerebral hemorrhage, epidural hematoma, epidural emphysema in the right frontal lobe... The patient was prescribed painkillers, tetanus antitoxin injection, and antibiotics.
However, while the nurse was injecting intravenous antibiotics, the bo.y suddenly showed signs of anaphylactic shoc.k, difficulty breathing, rapid pulse, low bloo.d pressure and fell into a state of circulatory arrest. The on-duty team immediately performed CPR to treat the anaphylactic shoc.k and alerted the entire hospital.
"Although we repeatedly asked the patient's family to go outside so that the doctors and nurses could focus on emergency care, the family still did not comply. Even when a male nurse went to get medical equipment for emergency care, as soon as he reached the door, someone 'hit' him in the stomach. Due to the pai.n, this medical staff stood there holding his stomach for a few seconds before being able to continue. A moment later, the unit's security guard arrived and was able to take the family member outside," said Dr. Hung.
After about 3 minutes, the bo.y's heart started beatin.g again. 5 minutes later, the patient was awake, could be called and asked, and his bloo.d pressure was stable. After 20 minutes, the patient was awake, breathing oxygen through glasses, and could communicate normally. The patient was then transferred to another medical facility - where neurosurgery was possible. The latest information is that this case is stable and does not require surgery.
After being posted, the clip received many comments from social media users expressing their outrage at the patient's family's behavior. "Feel sorry for the doctor, who was 'impacted' on the stomach, held his stomach in pai.n and then continued to treat the patient. I request the law to intervene and deal with the man who 'impacted' the doctor," TA shared. Speaking to reporters, Dr. Vuong Truong Thai, Director of Thanh Ba District Medical Center, said: "We have sent documents to the police. We will inform you when we have information."
