Venerable Thich Chan Tinh said that when the Buddha was still alive, there were many practitioners who attained Arhatship.
Among the World-Honored One's monastic disciples, there are 80 who are classified as Great Sravakas, these are Saints with exceptionally excellent virtue. Among them, Mahakasyapa is known as the First Dau Da.
According to the monk, Dau Da means asceticism. People who practice Dau Da practice accept difficulties in matters of food, clothing, and shelter. People who practice this practice will easily restrain their body and mind and purify the three karmas.
Venerable Thich Chan Tinh cited that in the great dictionary Phat Quang, it is mentioned that people who practice asceticism practice 12 ascetic practices. In the Purity of the Tao Luan, the ascetic practitioner specializes in practicing 13 ascetic dharmas.
Firstly, about wearing: Dau Dau practitioners only wear three robes and do not accept a fourth robe. Cloths collected from cemeteries, on the street, and piles of trash are brought back to be patched and sewn into robes to wear, called chalk robes. Do not accept ready-made robes offered by donors.
Second, about eating: Dau Da practitioners only eat food in bowls, eat by begging for alms, when begging for alms, they must go sequentially from house to house, not distinguishing between rich and poor, regardless of delicious food. Bad, eats one meal a day, sits down to eat only once, and once stood up, doesn't sit down to eat again. Do not store or save food until the next day.
Thirdly, about living: Dau Da practitioners live at the base of trees, in forests, in cemeteries, in the middle of the sky, anywhere as long as it is safe and secure, especially only sitting and not lying down. sitting position.
The use of Dau Da Dharma is to practice the virtue of few desires and contentment and prevent greed. In today's living conditions, it is difficult for anyone to practice these thirteen early actions.
Practicing asceticism is beautiful in that it helps practitioners get rid of ego, seek the Buddha's way, and transform sentient beings. That is, above is asking for the Dharma of the World-Honored One to nourish the worldly body and wisdom, below is asking for a bowl of rice from believers to nourish this temporary body. Through that bowl of rice, it can activate people's compassion and almsgiving. Sometimes you only give a piece of rice but open your heart, thereby helping the other person sow good seeds. The liberation shirt worn by practitioners going out also symbolizes the ideal of enlightenment.
Until now, begging for alms still exists in Southern Buddhism and Mendicant Buddhism. The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha has regulations that no longer allow people to beg for alms; Pagodas and viharas can organize within the scope of the pagodas and viharas to recreate the practice and practice of that method to remind themselves to practice. According to the Venerable, nowadays, many true monks choose to enter retreat. This is also another practice of asceticism. During the retreat, you only sleep a few hours a day, drink in the morning, eat at noon, spend a lot of time reading scriptures, renewing your body and mind.
Recently, monk Thich Minh Tue has received attention for practicing this method. He said he is not a Buddhist monk, does not practice and is not an employee of any temple or monastery of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.
Over the past years, he only listened to the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and learned to practice the Dao Dao practice. This practice has 13 ascetic methods, of which Dau Da practice is one of the highest and most classic methods of Buddhism. Dau Da practitioners accept difficulties in matters of food, clothing, and shelter (wearing patched clothes, begging for alms, eating one meal a day, not accepting money offerings, refusing all comforts...).
To follow the Buddhist practice, Mr. Thich Minh Tue started walking to many provinces and cities since 2017. At first, he sometimes traveled by bus. In 2020 until now, Mr. Tu has always walked absolutely, only occasionally traveling by water and having to use a boat or ferry across the river. Up to now, he has set foot in almost every region of the country, only three provinces of Tay Ninh, Tra Vinh, and Ben Tre have not been to because these localities are not on the main road.
"My journey is to walk for the rest of my life. The purpose is not to convey anything, because everything in Buddhism has already been taught by Shakyamuni Buddha. I just want to practice the Buddha's teachings. to help improve myself. When I walk, I always wish for everyone to always be happy and live happily with their families," Mr. Thich Minh Tue said.
Mr. Thich Minh Tue shared that he used to doubt the Buddha's teachings, but now is more mature so he wants to study and follow those teachings to see if he can be happy and peaceful. When he decided to leave home and job to walk, he thought very carefully, then asked his parents for permission to leave. Because he was determined to follow asceticism, Mr. Tu always picked up cloth thrown on the side of the road or in the trash while walking and sewed it to make clothes. If someone intentionally threw it to him, he would not accept it.
He only eats one meal a day. When traveling on the road, if he meets someone with a heart and a predestined relationship who sends him vegetarian rice or water, he uses just enough. Passing through rivers and streams, he stopped to bathe. In the evening, he often rests on the side of the road, and when he wants to go to the bathroom, he stops at gas stations. "For me, all walking journeys are not difficult. When moving, if my mind is peaceful, happy and can overcome obstacles, I will feel that there are no more obstacles ahead. ", he said.
