According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Response Agency (AFAD), on February 27, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in the Yesilyurt area of Malatya province, which was hit by the February 6 earthquake disaster, caused the death of more than 44,000 people in the country and thousands more in neighboring Syria.
"A citizen has left. 69 people were injured," said Yunus Sezer, head of AFAD's disaster department.
The image of Mesut Hancer holding his daughter's hand from under the rubble after the earthquake three weeks ago has become a symbolic image of the disaster in Turkey, which has been viewed by millions around the world.
I lost my mother, brothers, and nephews in the earthquake. But nothing compares to burying a child. The pain is indescribable," Hancer said.
It can be said that there is no pain more painful than being helpless to watch a loved one pass away in front of your eyes.
In order not to have to witness such tragic tragedies, in the past few days, rescue work is still being carried out urgently. During the search journey on Turkish soil, seeing the desperate pain, there are still miracles appearing. With the support of rescue dogs, many people are lucky enough to walk through the scythe of death.
Under the concrete pavement of tons pressed tightly, leaving only a small gap, Vietnamese professional dogs scoured and barked loudly when detecting signs of people.
Hearing the sound of Pocka dogs barking and scratching repeatedly, Captain Nguyen Van Nghia, Captain of the Rescue and Rescue Dog Team of the Vietnamese Army, knew that it was a sign that there was a source of human gas. He immediately reported to the commander.
The Engineer Rescue Team received the order, used hydraulic pliers to cut the iron to open the way for the professional dog to check again, and then put the equipment in the search. After knowing the exact location of the person in distress, Captain Nghia planted a flag. The engineers continued to open the road, supporting the rescue forces of your country to dig for victims.
It was the first day that 76 military personnel and six professional dogs of Vietnam embarked on rescue, after a distance of more than 8,000 km with two flights and traveling by car to Hatay (Turkey). The tourist city located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea with its long-standing cultural heritage is one of the 10 localities that suffered heavy damage after the earthquakes on February 6.
On February 13, when they arrived, the delegation worked with the Turkish coordinating agency as well as the United Nations to receive the task. The Vietnamese team was assigned to search in Haci Omer Alpagot commune, Antakya district of Hatay, where there are about 5,200 people. The tactic is to use professional dogs to sniff, engineers to detect, mark the location of the buried victim, and hand over to the rescue force of your country to bring the victim out.
Thanks to the sharp noses of professional dogs, on the first day, the Vietnamese team found 3 suspected locations with victims. Engineers paved the way with local rescuers to get one person out; The other two positions were handed over to the local forces to dig and find three more victims.
Six professional dogs of the 24th Border Guard Intermediate School, Border Guard Command became "four-legged scouts" sniffing out the location of the victim or signs of life. Five of the six military commanders have black and yellow fur, similar to German becgies, and the other is black like Malinois, who have been trained in rescue and rescue for many years.
According to Captain Nghia, professional dogs can find the source of air at a depth of 5-7 m, even 12 m, helping to speed up the search time. In which, Pocka - an 8-year-old military commander who has participated in many rescues in the country, is always the most aggressive in the group. In 2017, Pocka saved the life of a baby and found three victims in the flash flood in Muong La (Son La); in 2020, participated in the search for 13 officers and soldiers in distress in Sub-zone 67, Rao Trang hydropower plant (Thua Thien Hue).
On the second day in Hatay, deep in the basement of a collapsed house, Pocka discovered another location with a gas source. Cut into his leg by a piece of glass, he was taken to the headquarters to rest, to be bandaged by a veterinarian.
The rescue team of the Vietnamese army after 10 days of searching at 31 points identified 15 locations with people, the rescue force then found 38 victims.
In return, in the days in the heart of the disaster, the Turkish people, despite the lack of food, still shared a portion of drinking water for professional dogs, gave bread to the Vietnamese army as a thank you. On the contrary, soldiers from the country 8,000 km away share dry food and shrimp noodles with the villagers.
