The online community is paying close attention to the recent verdict on Mr. Vuong Tan Viet - also known as Venerable Thich Chan Quang. He was recently convicted of illegally using a high school diploma and had his university degree revoked.
Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training has coordinated with relevant agencies to verify Mr. Vuong Tan Viet's qualifications. The results determined that Mr. Vuong Tan Viet used an illegal high school diploma and Mr. Viet also admitted this. The Ministry of Education and Training has directed Hanoi Law University and Hanoi University to promptly revoke the qualifications granted to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet in accordance with the law.
Mr. Vuong Tan Viet's license was revoked.
Recently, the Ministry of Education requested universities to revoke the degrees granted to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet, also known as Venerable Thich Chan Quang, after determining that his high school diploma was not legitimate.
On the evening of October 21, a representative of the Ministry of Education and Training announced the above information. The results were released after the Ministry carefully reviewed the training process and coordinated with relevant agencies to verify the qualifications of Mr. Vuong Tan Viet, 65 years old.
The Ministry requested relevant higher education institutions to urgently revoke the diploma granted to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet and review the training process to avoid similar cases.
Previously, Mr. Viet was said to have taken the high school supplementary exam at Trung Nhat School, Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City, on June 6, 1989. However, more than two months ago, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that Mr. Viet's name was not on the list of high school graduation exams in 1989 in the area. This verification was carried out at the request of the Government's Committee for Religious Affairs.
Previously, in a report sent to the Ministry of Education and Training, Hanoi Law University affirmed that granting Mr. Viet a doctorate degree was in accordance with regulations. The school said that before obtaining a bachelor's degree in law, Mr. Viet graduated from the University of Foreign Languages (now Hanoi University) in 2001, majoring in English.
In 2017, he passed the 2nd Degree, Course 1, Law University level, part-time study form of Hanoi Law University (opened at Bach Viet College, Ho Chi Minh City).
In January 2019, he was recognized as a graduate and awarded a Bachelor of Laws degree - Second Degree - part-time study according to Decision No. 140/QD-DHLHN dated January 15, 2019 of Hanoi Law University, ranked as Excellent.
In November 2019, he was admitted to the 25B PhD course (2019-2023 academic year) according to Decision 4567/QD-DHLHN dated November 26, 2019 of Hanoi Law University.
On December 26, 2019, Mr. Vuong Tan Viet was recognized as a doctoral student under Decision 5114/QD-DHLHN of Hanoi Law University, majoring in Constitutional and Administrative Law.
On December 9, 2021, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis at Hanoi Law University.
On March 17, 2022, he was awarded a Doctorate of Law in Constitutional and Administrative Law under Decision No. 1141/QD-DHLHN of Hanoi Law University.
According to Hanoi Law University, the total training time of student Vuong Tan Viet from the time he was recognized as a PhD student (December 2019) until the decision to recognize his degree and grant his doctorate degree (March 2022) was 2 years.
Mr. Vuong Tan Viet, also known as Venerable Thich Chan Quang, is the abbot of Phat Quang Pagoda in Tan Hai Commune, Phu My Town, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province. He used to be the Deputy Head of the Central Economic and Financial Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha. On June 18, he was banned from preaching for two years by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha. The reason was determined to be that some of his teachings on the doctrine of cause and effect were not in accordance with the Dharma, causing confusion in society, undermining faith in Buddhism and affecting the reputation of the Sangha.
