Thich Chan Quang's degree revoked: Hanoi University officially completes procedures

Venerable Thich Chan Quang - also known as Mr. Vuong Tan Viet - has officially had all of his degrees revoked by Hanoi University, after the verdict that he used his high school diploma in violation of regulations. Regarding his doctorate, the school also has official information.

"Hanoi University is carrying out procedures to revoke the bachelor's degree in foreign languages, English major, from the distance learning program granted to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (Thich Chan Quang)," said Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice President of Hanoi University.

Mr. Viet studied English Language, distance learning program at the University of Foreign Languages (now Hanoi University) from 1994 to 2001. This was also the first university to awar.d a bachelor's degree in English to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet.

Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training has reviewed the training process and coordinated with relevant agencies to verify Mr. Thich Chan Quang's qualifications following a thorough, careful process, in accordance with legal regulations. The results determined that Mr. Thich Chan Quang used an illegal high school diploma, and Mr. Thich Chan Quang also admitted this.

The Ministry of Education and Training has requested relevant higher education institutions to urgently revoke the diploma granted to Mr. Thich Chan Quang according to the law, and at the same time review the training organization process to avoid similar cases.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan - Head of the Postgraduate Training Department (Hanoi Law University) said that Hanoi Law University is carrying out legal procedures to cancel the results and revoke the degrees granted to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (ie Venerable Thich Chan Quang) in accordance with the provisions of law.

"After the incident, Hanoi Law University held a meeting to review and evaluate the implementation of training regulations to continue improving the process, enhancing training quality and avoiding similar cases" - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan affirmed.

Hanoi Law University further informed that before applying for the PhD program, Mr. Vuong Tan Viet graduated with a bachelor's degree in English in 2001 from the University of Foreign Languages (now Hanoi University); graduated with a bachelor's degree in law in 2019 from Hanoi Law University (second degree, part-time program).

After that, Mr. Vuong Tan Viet became a PhD student and completed his training program at Hanoi Law University. On December 9, 2021, the PhD student successfully defended his thesis at the university level. On March 17, 2022, the PhD student was awarded a doctorate degree.

Previously, regarding the training process and granting of a doctoral degree to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet, Hanoi Law University affirmed that the total time of doctoral training of student Vuong Tan Viet (ie Venerable Thich Chan Quang) until the decision to recognize the degree and grant the doctoral degree was 2 years and 3 months, meeting and complying with the doctoral training regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the school's decision.

Previously, on July 30, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City had a working session with the inspection team of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs - Ministry of Home Affairs through the letter of introduction to verify the learning process of Mr. Thich Chan Quang. Through the working session, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City coordinated with the inspection team to review all records including the list of candidates who graduated from supplementary high school and the list of names and scores of all candidates who took the exam on June 6, 1989.

At the en.d of the inspection process, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City confirmed that Mr. Thich Chan Quang was not on the list of candidates and the score sheet of the 1989 high school supplementary graduation exam of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City. At the same time, Mr. Thich Chan Quang's name was also not on the list of high school supplementary graduation certificates issued on June 6, 1989 by the Department.

Mr. Thich Chan Quang once caused a stir in public opinion when he successfully defended his doctoral thesis at Hanoi Law University in a period of 2 years and 3 months.
