The 2025 Lunar New Year flower market across the country is entering its peak shopping season. However, the buying and selling atmosphere is not as vibrant as every year. While Tet flower traders are worried about sluggish sales, the flower market is witnessing large fluctuations in prices.
Throughout the Tet flower markets, from major streets like Ho Thi Ky (HCMC) to central areas in Hanoi, stalls are filled with fresh flowers of all vibrant colors, but the eager eyes and joyful atmosphere of previous years are absent. Traders at the Tet flower markets cannot hide their disappointment.
In addition to concerns about unsold goods, retailers also face difficulties with prices. This year, Tet flower prices have increased by 10-15% compared to last year due to many factors. According to experts, the shortage of flowers due to dry weather in major flower growing areas, combined with high transportation costs, has caused flower prices to fluctuate significantly this year.
Specifically, the price of peach blossoms this year ranges from 1.5 million to 2 million VND for small peach trees, while large peach trees cost up to 10 million VND. Southern yellow apricot, one of the popular flowers during Tet, also costs from 3 million to 5 million VND depending on the size. Small kumquat trees for families cost about 800,000 to 1.2 million VND each.
However, despite the increase in flower prices, purchasing power has not been as expected. Ms. Tuyet Mai, a trader at Ho Thi Ky flower market, said that current purchasing power is only 70% of what it was before the COVID-19 pandemic. "Before, I sold dozens of flower packages every day, but now it takes me dozens of days to sell one package," Ms. Mai shared. The concern about the sluggish situation not only affects income but also makes traders worry about unsold goods that cannot be sold.
Faced with the sluggish situation, many retailers have sought ways to cope and minimize risks. To increase sales, some retailers have turned to online sales methods. Ms. Huynh Nhu Ngoc, owner of Ngoc Nhien flower market at Ho Thi Ky market (HCMC), said that this year she has implemented many support programs and policies to attract customers to order flowers online.
Specifically, these programs include free shipping on large orders, a 1-to-1 return policy if the flowers are damaged during delivery, and detailed instructions on how to care for the flowers to ensure long-term freshness. Thanks to these policies, the number of online orders at Ms. Ngoc's flower shop has increased by about 30%. "Buyers not only place retail orders but also have many large orders from companies and flower shops," Ms. Ngoc shared.
In addition to selling online, retailers are also looking for ways to sell flowers earlier. According to Mr. Pham Hoang Thai Duong, CEO of the Hoa Yeu Thuong chain of stores, being flexible with prices, reducing the amount of imported goods and shifting consumption to online channels are feasible measures to minimize risks in the context of an unstable market.
Although the Tet flower market this year is not very vibrant, traders still hope for a change in the last days of December. They expect that when people start to have Tet holidays, receive Tet bonuses and do Tet shopping, the demand for flowers will increase.
In addition, feng shui flowers such as yellow apricot blossoms, kumquat trees or red lilies are predicted to be popular choices during Tet this year, not only because of their beauty but also because of the luck and fortune they bring to families in the new year.
The 2025 Tet flower market is facing many challenges due to weak purchasing power, high flower prices, and traders' concerns about inventory backlog. However, with changes in sales methods and expectations of recovery in the coming days, there is still confidence that the Tet flower market will soon flourish, bringing bright colors to the new spring.
