Athlete Nguyen Thi Huong "abandoned": Famous achievements, but a difficult life?

Nguyen Thi Huong, Vietnam's top female canoeist, has faced financial difficulties that have prevented her from continuing to train locally. This has attracted great public attention.

Nguyen Thi Huong was born in 2001 in Vinh Phuc, and she has been involved in sports since she was a secondary school student. Initially, she participated in freestyle wrestling before switching to canoeing in 2016. From there, Huong's career began to shine, with consecutive impressive achievements at the SEA Games and international tournaments.

At the 31st SEA Games, Nguyen Thi Huong won 5 gold medals. She won the 200m, 500m, and 1,000m single sculls, and her 4-person sculls won 2 more gold medals in the 500m and 1,000m. These achievements not only affirmed her outstanding talent but also contributed to raising the position of Vietnamese canoeing in the regional arena.

Not stopping there, at the 32nd SEA Games, although canoeing was not included in the official competition system, Nguyen Thi Huong still competed and contributed to the traditional Vietnamese boat team with 3 gold medals. She continued to prove her bravery and resilience, not only being the pride of Vietnamese sports but also a role model for generations of young athletes.

In April 2024, Nguyen Thi Huong continued to have a major breakthrough when she won a silver medal at the Asian Speed Canoe Championship, thereby officially qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics. This achievement not only helped her create a historical mark for Vietnamese canoeing, but also brought pride to the country's sports, as for the first time a Vietnamese canoeist passed the Olympic qualifying round.

However, the joy of sports achievements did not last long when Nguyen Thi Huong faced financial difficulties in training and competing locally. At the end of 2024, she submitted a resignation letter to the Vinh Phuc Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center, where she was living and practicing. The reason she gave was that over the past 3 years, she had not received medal bonuses from domestic competitions as well as nutritional support in 2024.

Besides Nguyen Thi Huong, several other athletes from Vinh Phuc have also decided to take a break from training due to similar situations. The Vinh Phuc Sports Training and Competition Center has announced the temporary suspension of training for many sports teams, including rowing, due to lack of funds. This has led to the athletes having to fend for themselves, including Nguyen Thi Huong, who had to take a break from training and temporarily transfer to the national rowing team.

Despite the difficulties in her locality, Nguyen Thi Huong is still guaranteed a training and competition regime when she becomes a member of the national rowing team. Mr. Nguyen Hai Duong, General Secretary of the Vietnam Rowing Federation, affirmed: "It is very unfortunate that Nguyen Thi Huong is facing difficulties in her locality. However, she is still a member of the Vietnam rowing team, and all training and competition activities as well as the regime in the team will still be guaranteed."

Currently, Nguyen Thi Huong has moved to Hai Phong to train with the national rowing team, with a full support system in terms of nutrition and training. This helps her maintain her form and continue to compete in important international tournaments.

Nguyen Thi Huong’s story reflects a major problem in Vietnamese sports, which is the lack of funding and support for athletes. Athletes like Nguyen Thi Huong need not only care and training, but also attention from authorities and the community.
