On the morning of April 13, the People's Court of Vinh Long province opened a trial for defendants Pham Van Cung (40 years old, living in Tam Binh district) and Nguyen Tuan Si (living in Vinh Long city) on the charge of "fraud to appropriate property".
Defendant Pham Van Cung is the former abbot of Phuoc Quang pagoda, and the director of the Buddhist Orphanage Center of the Fountain of Love.
In the case, there is another defendant, Le Nguyen Khoa (36 years old, living in Can Tho City), but this person has fled, the police agency has issued a wanted decision.
In this morning, the jury checked the background of the accused and the people involved. The trial is expected to last for two days.
The case has 4 victims, in which one victim has filed an application for trial in absentia. The representative of the People's Procuracy announced the prosecution of Cung and his accomplices.
According to the indictment, since 2005, Pham Van Cung has been a monk, dharma name Thich Phuoc Ngoc, a monk at Phuoc Quang pagoda (Tam Binh district, Vinh Long). In September 2008, this person was appointed by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha as the abbot of Phuoc Quang Pagoda.
Also in 2008, the Buddhist Orphanage Center Spring of Love (raising orphans) was established under the decision of the Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Long province.
In November 2012, Pham Van Cung was assigned to be the director of the center.
During the time of practicing at Phuoc Quang pagoda, defendant Cung knew Le Nguyen Khoa and kept in contact with each other. When the Orphanage Center went into operation, Cung appointed Khoa as his assistant secretary.
In the process of working at Phuoc Quang Pagoda and the director of the Spring of Love Center, Pham Van Cung organized many programs and events to create a reputation for himself. At that time, Cung introduced to everyone that he knew many high-ranking leaders at the Central Government.
Cung makes videos about the charity activities of the temple and the center to put on social networks to promote the image and create trust for many people. In order to have money for personal consumption, Pham Van Cung used the name of temples and centers to contact people with economic conditions.
At that time, Cung introduced his charity work and talked about the difficulties and hardships in raising orphans, his intention to "extort" money from benefactors. Cung also concocted bogus events to borrow money from many people.
Accordingly, in 2015, defendant Pham Van Cung became acquainted with a woman who is the director of an electronic equipment trading company in Ho Chi Minh City.
Knowing that the woman mentioned above was financially a Buddhist, Cung lied after building a temple, an orphanage center and a Buddha statue, he still owed 6.5 billion dong. True thought, the woman went to the temple and lent the palace 700 million dong. At this time, Cung directed the accused Khoa to print the merit receipt. When the woman questioned, Cung said: "Writing the content of the offering is only validating the voucher for the temple and the center".
After that, Cung continued to hire a number of porters in Lang Son to pretend to be kidnappers, using a foreign phone number to call the woman mentioned above to threaten and ask to transfer money otherwise "Mr Cung cannot come back Vietnam".
Tuong Cung was really kidnapped, the businesswoman transferred more than 5.7 billion VND to the account of the orphanage center to "save Cung".
By deceitful tricks, Pham Van Cung also repeatedly cheated money from the woman mentioned above. The total amount of money provided by this person is more than 18.5 billion VND.
When discovered, Pham Van Cung partially refunded and appropriated more than 11.6 billion VND from the victim.
In 2017, Pham Van Cung knew a woman in Hanoi and invited her to Vinh Long to visit Phuoc Quang Pagoda, the center of love.
When he saw that the Hanoi woman had trusted him, Cung continued to make up the story that he and the orphans of the center were captured by the gangsters on a truck and threatened to kill. In order for the plan to succeed, Cung asked Le Nguyen Khoa to help compose a message and set up a fake scene of the kidnapping to send to the victim.
The woman in Hanoi thought it was true that she transferred money to Cung's account, and at the same time brought cash to Khoa and Cung's driver with a total amount of more than 26 billion VND.
In another case, in 2018, Cung was in the Russian Federation when he knew a woman from Hung Yen province.
After introducing himself as the abbot of the temple, director of the springs of love center, Pham Van Cung said he was "the International Envoy of the Sri Lankan Government's Committee for Commendation and Commendation of Buddhism". After that, Cung invited the woman to come back to Vietnam to visit Phuoc Quang pagoda.
After the woman entered Vinh Long, she was led by Cung to visit and meet many people. Cung also gave a thank you note, a certificate of charity to the victims, and invited a number of monks from Vinh Long to Hung Yen to perform worshiping ceremonies to create good luck for the business.
After that, Cung played a trick to repeatedly cheat money and appropriate more than 17 billion VND from the victim...
With sophisticated tricks, defendant Cung defrauded the victims of nearly 68 billion VND.
