The information was confirmed by Eloy GarcÃa, a spokesperson for the Chihuahua State Prosecutor's Office.
According to GarcÃa, a total of 381 bodies were found in "improper storage" at a private crematorium.
"We note that these bodies were not cremated in accordance with the process, but instead were mummified and piled up indiscriminately, scattered on the floor in various rooms of the facility," GarcÃa said.
The scene was described as chaotic: "They just threw the bodies away like that â bluffing, unclassified, lying on top of each other." According to GarcÃa, some of the bodies may have been left at the facility for two years without any proper legal or medical treatment.
Initially, local media only reported about about 60 bodies, but after the official count, the actual number was six times higher, prompting the public and authorities to simultaneously demand clarification.
One element of outrage is the fact that the relatives of the victims have been returned "ashes", but in reality, according to Mr. GarcÃa, it is not the ashes of the deceased but "another kind of material". He called this behavior "gross negligence and irresponsibility" on the part of the facility operator.
One of the managers of the crematorium has presented himself to the prosecutor's office, but authorities have not released information on whether the bodies are involved in criminal cases. The investigation is still ongoing.
The findings immediately raised concerns about the ability to manage, supervise and work ethic in the forensic profession in Mexico , a country that has been grappling with a crisis of mass disappearances due to violence for years.
According to statistics, Mexico currently has tens of thousands of cases of unexplained disappearances, and the number of bodies that need to be examined, handled after cases or died of unknown causes is increasing. Meanwhile, the country's forensic system is considered to be in serious crisis, with a shortage of manpower, equipment and funding that has lasted for years.
Some forensic examination rooms are so overloaded that they have to store bodies in refrigerated vehicles or temporary facilities, causing controversy in public opinion and affecting criminal investigations.
Local and federal officials are being asked to clarify the responsibilities, not only of the individual who runs the private facility, but also in licensing, inspecting and monitoring private forensic activity.
This case, according to many experts, is not just a personal misconduct, but also reflects the deep gaps in the system of autopsy and body disposal in Mexico, where death and disappearance have become part of daily life for many communities.
The handling of consequences is still being implemented. Chihuahua state officials said they are coordinating with federal agencies to verify the identity of the bodies, notify relatives and determine the facility's liability.
The crematorium where the incident occurred has now been cordoned off and suspended, while a series of similar facilities in the area are also being reviewed for operating conditions and licenses.
The discovery of hundreds of illegally disposed bodies not only shook the country but also raised serious questions about the ability to control and professional ethics in Mexico's forensic services industry. As the country faces a humanitarian crisis due to prolonged violence and disappearances, this is a strong wake-up call for a comprehensive reform of the forensic system â from facilities and expertise to surveillance mechanisms â to ensure respect for the dignity of the deceased and the beliefs of the living.
