Recently, Con Dao district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has just tried 2 suppliers and brokers for buying and selling warbler eggs (sea turtles) for 'Violating regulations on protection of endangered, precious and rare wildlife'.
Accordingly, two defendants residing in Con Dao, Luong Kieu Tinh (born 1980) received 1 year in prison and Pham Anh Tuan (born 1997, taxi driver) received 1 year in prison but received suspended sentences.
Two female tourists, Do Thi Le Hoa (born 1975, resident of Lim town, Tien Du district, Bac Ninh) were fined VND 500 million and Le Thi Chi (born 1992, residing in Hoang Mai district, Hanoi) was fined VND 550 million.
Defendant Hoa is defendant Chi's mother-in-law.
Earlier on the morning of June 12, 2023, Con Dao airport security discovered in Do Thi Le Hoa's personal suitcase five circular objects suspected to be vich eggs.
The results of the examination by the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) determined that four circular objects in Hoa's suitcase were spade eggs, the other one could not be identified because there were no DNA sequence results.
The case file shows that on the morning of June 11, 2023, Ms. Do Thi Le Hoa and her family, including her daughter-in-law Le Thi Chi, went to Con Dao for a trip. While in Con Dao, Chi took a taxi driven by Pham Anh Tuan and asked Tuan to buy spade eggs.
Tuan called Luong Kieu Tinh to ask to buy five spake eggs and was quoted at VND 250,000 each. Tuan quoted the price back to Chi and she agreed to buy it. While waiting for Ms. Hoa and Chi's family to have dinner, Tuan went to Tinh's house to retrieve five boiled eggs that Tinh hung in the front cabinet rather than delivering them directly.
When he returned to pick up Ms. Hoa's family back to the hotel, Tuan handed the ball bag with five eggs inside to Chi. Chi then handed it back to her father-in-law for him to take to his room.
In the early morning of June 12, Do Thi Le Hoa put five eggs in her and her husband's suitcase to go to the airport to leave Con Dao. But airport security found five circular objects suspected to be warbler eggs and reported them to the authorities for disposal.
Criminal charges have been filed in many cases related to the possession, transportation, and sale of eggs and spades.
Chelonia mydas is one of five species of sea turtles naturally distributed in Vietnam, and is protected at the highest level according to Vietnamese and international regulations.
On the list of endangered, precious and rare species prioritized for protection, the spade is on the list promulgated together with Decree 64/2019/ND-CP and Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Sea turtles play an extremely important role in the marine ecosystem. They ensure the health of coral reefs and seagrass beds, thereby contributing to creating a suitable environment for aquatic species such as shrimp, fish ... bring economic benefits to the people.
In Vietnam, Con Dao is the largest "spawning ground" of spades. Every year, hundreds of warblers go to Con Dao beaches to lay eggs.
Over the years, authorities in Con Dao have detected and criminally handled many cases related to the storage and transportation of spake eggs and their parts.
Specifically, in 2017, Con Dao TAND sentenced 10 months and 17 days in prison to a person who transported 116 spake eggs. In addition, two others were also fined non-custodial rehabilitation and another was fined VND 50 million for trafficking and transporting 30 spade eggs.
In 2019, two others were sentenced to two years in prison and three years and six months in prison also for possession of spade eggs.
At the end of January 2024, the People's Court of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province also sentenced 1 person in Con Dao to 30 months in prison for illegally possessing 29 alcohol-soaked warbler eggs.
