Recently, the Ministry of Public Security has said that it is investigating and verifying information related to the case of thousands of identity cards being sold on the Internet.
The Department of Cybersecurity and High-Tech Crime Prevention and Control (Ministry of Public Security) said that on May 15, the unit captured public information reflecting that 17 GB of data contained photos of identity cards. People of thousands of Vietnamese people are being sold for $9,000 on hacker forums.
Specifically, on a forum specializing in buying and selling hacker data, there are 17 GB of data containing photos of the identity cards of thousands of Vietnamese people for sale for $9,000. This information was posted from a member named "Ox1337xO" on May 13.
Specifically, 17 GB of data includes a photo of an ID card with address, phone number and email. In particular, a single file with a capacity of 1.4 GB contains information of 3.6 thousand people.
The above data is for sale for $ 9,000 (about 207 million) and paid in Bitcoin or Litecoin cryptocurrencies. If you want another form of payment, the buyer can choose to deal with an intermediary.
The title of these data files includes many sensitive keywords such as "xac-minh-kyc", "Idenfity_card_and_selfie_vietnam", indicating that these may be authentication files of a certain service. As of now, the post has been removed from the forum.
This account for sale of information also shared some screenshots, which included some documents, household registration books of Vietnamese people and accepted to buy and sell through an intermediary if the buyer was in doubt.
The pictures on the Internet show that they are the old identity cards, not the new citizen IDs. However, the Department of Cybersecurity and High-Tech Crime Prevention and Control confirmed that this is not a new trick of criminals that have been verified and clarified by the unit in coordination with functional forces.
Lieutenant Colonel Dao Trung Hieu (criminology expert, Ministry of Public Security) said that there are many sources that can lead to leakage of personal information. One of them is from pawn shops, many people, when unable to pay their debts, are willing to give up their IDs and re-issue them.
Another source to note is that hackers attack databases managed by agencies, especially industries that require people when participating in transactions to provide ID cards, such as banks.
Lieutenant Colonel Dao Trung Hieu affirmed that revealing personal information is very dangerous. People with information leaked may have trouble receiving messages, promotional emails, or calls offering to buy products, goods or services. More dangerous, personal information will be used for criminal purposes.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Hieu, if the subject really has 17 GB of personal information, it will be very dangerous as analyzed above. However, it is also possible that the seller does not have or only has the information of a few individuals but believes that there are many in hand. When someone wants to buy, this person will ask for a "deposit" money transfer, receive the money and then immediately block all communication channels, the purpose is to cheat to appropriate property.
In addition, crooks can also use your personal information to borrow from companies with lax authentication processes. Currently, there are many users who suddenly get bad debt or get debt collection even though they have never borrowed money anywhere.
