Doctors performed tendon surgery, treated the injuries, and the patient's health gradually stabilized.

Currently, the patient's health has gradually stabilized. It is known that the Becgie dog raised by Mr. T.'s family weighs about 35kg.

According to Dr. Hoang Hai Phuc, Director of the Dak Lak Provincial Center for Disease Control, in less than the first 2 months of 2024, the province recorded 3 deaths due to rabies.

"In the coming months, we will enter the hot season, which will easily lead to outbreaks of many dangerous infectious diseases, especially rabies. Therefore, people need to further improve their awareness of disease prevention to protect their health and lives. When infected Dog bites, cat scratches, people should go to medical facilities to get advice from doctors and instructions on vaccination or disease prevention serum," Mr. Phuc recommended.

A similar incident also happened in Phu Quoc with a 55-year-old woman. Specifically, the victim was attacked while feeding the German Shepherd dog yesterday. As soon as the barn door opened, an animal weighing more than 30kg rushed out and bit the woman's arms, legs and face, only stopping when many people intervened. The dog that bit someone had previously been kept in a cage for a long time and was quite aggressive.

According to the Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health), in Vietnam, dogs are the main reservoir of rabies virus (usually 96 - 97%), followed by cats (3 - 4%). Other animals (rabbits, mice, squirrels...) have not been found to contain rabies virus.

The latest surveillance in 2023 shows that, among rabies cases with test results, about 10% are caused by cat bites.

Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals excreted and through bites, licks, scratches on broken skin (or through intact mucous membranes) into the body, from there through the nerves. nerves to the lymph nodes and central nervous system.

In animals, when it reaches the central nerve, the virus reproduces very quickly and then follows the nerve to the salivary gland. At this time, the nerves have not been significantly damaged, so the animal's appearance is still normal, but the saliva has rabies virus. After that, the rabies virus gradually destroys nerve cells, causing typical clinical symptoms of rabies to appear.

In humans, after infection with rabies virus (most cases of exposure to rabies are through bites or licks of rabid animals), the incubation period for rabies is from 2 - 8 weeks, maybe only about 10 days. But it can also last for more than 1 year or 2 years.

The incubation period in humans depends on the amount of rabies virus entering the body, the severity of the wound; distance from the wound to the brain. Severe injuries, near the central nervous system (face, head), have a short incubation period.

Therefore, when bitten, scratched, or licked by a dog or animal, you need to wash the wound under running water as soon as possible within 15 minutes. Wash the wound with soap and water or with substances that have antibacterial effects such as 70-degree medical alcohol or strong alcohol, soap... and urgently go to the nearest medical facility to have the wound evaluated. Advise on vaccination and serum according to each specific case.
