Effects of Typhoon Talim: Thunderstorms "toppled" ancient trees, collapsed eaves, billboards fell on people

Due to the influence of Typhoon Talim, heavy rain and thunderstorms occurred on the afternoon of July 17, causing a series of trees to be uprooted and many billboards blown up in many places in Ho Chi Minh City and the South.

On the afternoon of July 17, in Ho Chi Minh City, during heavy rain, a phoenix tree nearly 15 m high suddenly uprooted, blocking Vo Thi Thanks lane, Tan Thuan Dong ward, district 7. At that time, the street was empty, so there was no traffic. no casualties. At the scene, a rotten tree stump was lying on the cracked sidewalk.

On Pham Van Dong Street, the intersection with Street 25 (Hiep Binh Chanh Ward, Thu Duc City), a 10-year-old tree suddenly fell down. Green tree with wide canopy, root showing signs of decay. However, trees fell on the sidewalk, so there was no injury or property damage.

At the scene, the ancient mother-of-pearl tree crushed the cafe's eaves and electrical wires. Many motorbikes that were standing close to the tree were also toppled.

At nearly 6pm on July 17, the incident handling work was still being urgently overcome by functional forces.

In Hiep Thanh ward, Thu Dau Mot city, due to the influence of thunderstorms, the tarpaulin and iron bar on the billboard near National Highway 13 fell on pedestrians and on the eaves of people's houses. Meanwhile, a tree more than 15 m high on National Highway 1A through Bien Hoa City (Dong Nai) also poured onto the road, but did not fall on pedestrians.

High winds also swept the corrugated iron roof of Mekong Logistics Co., Ltd (Bien Hoa Industrial Park 2) into the nearby 110kV An Binh substation. The incident caused the transformer to be damaged, and 110 businesses in Bien Hoa 2 industrial park lost power. By 8:30 p.m., the electricity industry had just finished fixing and generating electricity again.

The tornado also toppled a mother-of-pearl tree with a height of more than 10m and crushed a 16-seat car running on National Highway N1 passing through Ha Tien city (Kien Giang). The incident did not cause any casualties, but the passenger car suffered damage to its front and body, and the road was congested. About an hour later, the functional forces removed the tree trunk from the scene, and traffic returned to normal.

At 7:00 am on July 18, Typhoon Talim was 100km from Mong Cai (Quang Ninh), with the strongest wind of 102 km/h, level 10, expected to enter the Vietnam - China border in 4 hours. At 4 p.m., the center of the storm in the northeast of the North, the wind reduced to level 7 and weakened into a tropical depression. The tropical depression then continued to go deep into the northern mountains and dissipated early on July 19.

Today, three airports directly and indirectly affected by Typhoon Talim, Van Don (Quang Ninh), Cat Bi (Hai Phong) and Noi Bai (Hanoi) have closed. The call for boats and people to evacuate in the coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Thai Binh has been basically completed. Localities are on standby to prevent rain after storms that may cause flooding, landslides, and affect key dikes.

Typhoon Talim formed on the tropical convergence band in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, after entering the East Sea mainly in the northwest direction, quickly increased in intensity, reaching a maximum of 133 km/h (level 12) on May 17/ 7. After Talim, there are likely to be 2-3 storms forming from this convergence, one of which will enter the East Sea in the next 4-6 days.
