Ho Chi Minh City, January 16, 2026. The People's Court of Region 7, Ho Chi Minh City, has just sentenced defendant Dinh Thi Lan (born in 1976, residing in Ho Chi Minh City), known on social media by the channel name "Lan Dinh," for the crime of "Abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State, the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and individuals."
Accordingly, the defendant was sentenced to 1 year and 9 months in prison for posting information that insulted the honor and reputation of others on the Internet.
Responding to the court, defendant Dinh Thi Lan testified that she had two accounts, Lan Dinh and Lan Dinh 2. She stated that the Lan Dinh account mentioned in the investigation report was a different account and not hers. She also claimed that she did not upload the video clips. She stated that she made the videos to vent her frustrations but had not yet uploaded them to YouTube. Afterward, she lost her phone, and the video clips were subsequently uploaded online.
Ms. Lan also told the court that she had known Mr. Huynh Uy Dung since 2008 during business dealings, when she collaborated with Dai Nam Joint Stock Company on a film studio. In 2012, Mr. Dung introduced Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hang to Ms. Lan. There was no conflict between Ms. Lan and Mr. and Mrs. Dung.
When the prosecutor asked, "Did Mr. Dung and Ms. Hang provide you with the information to post? Did you ask for their permission?", Ms. Lan replied that she only made the video clip to vent her frustrations and did not broadcast it, so she didn't need to ask anyone.
In court, Ms. Lan stated that during the investigation process, she repeatedly appealed against the procedural decisions and therefore refused to accept the indictment and the trial decision. She also said that during her detention, she submitted 36 complaints which remained unresolved.
Ms. Lan also stated that she had filed a request to postpone the trial because her complaint had not yet been resolved. She also requested to have a defense lawyer and a change of prosecutor.
In court, prosecutors Tran Quang Trung and Tran Thi Hai Huyen affirmed that they had served the detention order to the defendant in accordance with the law, therefore the request to change prosecutors was unfounded. However, the assessment falls under the authority of the trial panel.
The lay judges suggested that the defendant should maintain a calm and concise demeanor, focus on the questions posed by the panel of judges, and refrain from pointing or showing disrespect for the court's decision.
After deliberation, the panel of judges concluded that all procedural decisions were in accordance with the law, and there were no violations as the defendant claimed, so the trial continued.
Regarding Ms. Lan's request for legal representation, the panel of judges stated that during the trial, the court did not receive any such request from the defendant. Furthermore, after the first-instance judgment, the defendant still has the right to appeal, therefore the request to postpone the trial was not accepted.
According to the panel of judges, although Ms. Lan committed the crime for the first time and it was a less serious offense, and there were no mitigating circumstances, the court sentenced her to 1 year and 9 months of imprisonment (equivalent to 21 months in prison). This punishment reflects the necessity of addressing violations of the law related to the dissemination of false information that affects the honor and reputation of others on the internet.
Presenting before the panel of judges, lawyer Ho Nguyen Le (who is defending the legal rights and interests of Mrs. Hang and Mr. Dung) affirmed that he had collected some evidence and documents regarding the defendant's insults against his clients and had submitted them to the investigating agency.
Lawyer Ho Nguyen Le also stated that, regarding civil matters, Ms. Hang, Mr. Dung, Dai Nam Joint Stock Company, and Hang Huu Charity Fund do not request compensation from Ms. Dinh Thi Lan. Regarding criminal matters, lawyer Ho Nguyen Le requested the court to adjudicate in accordance with the law.
Presenting their views on resolving the case, the representative of the Procuratorate at the trial proposed that the Panel of Judges sentence the defendant Dinh Thi Lan to 18-24 months in prison.
Regarding the violations committed by defendant Dinh Thi Lan, the representative of the Procuratorate affirmed the charges as stated in the indictment. Specifically, defendant Dinh Thi Lan is accused of owning the YouTube account named "Lan Dinh," with the link Youtube.com.@laning9888. She allegedly used this YouTube account to record and distribute six video clips on social media. The content of these clips was false, inaccurate, or unverified, seriously damaging the reputation and honor of individuals; and posting confidential personal and family information and private details of Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hang and Mr. Huynh Uy Dung online, in violation of the law.
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hang, nicknamed Hang Canada, whose real name is Nguyen Thi Thanh Tuyen, was born on January 26, 1971. Currently, Ms. Phuong Hang is a businesswoman, the General Director and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dai Nam Joint Stock Company, and the wife of Mr. Huynh Uy Dung (also known as Dung "the lime kiln owner").
