In recent days, information that Ms. Phuong Hang violated a law in Cyprus and is at risk of having her European citizenship revoked has caused a stir among the public. The rumor originated from a tiktok channel specializing in immigration.
Specifically, the channel's host said: "She may not be able to live in Europe. However, she said she can no longer live in the country. So where will Ms. Hang's future go?
She bragged that her chil.d had just passed the entrance exam to a school in Cyprus, but she did not know that she had violated a law in Cyprus that could result in her having her European citizenship revoked.
In Cyprus law, there are 2 articles: 1. Those who apply for citizenship by investment have a regulation that within 5 years from the date of receiving the citizenship of Cyprus, if they are convicted in a country for more than 12 months, their citizenship of Cyprus will be revoked. Everyone knows that she established a company in 2019 to invest in Cyprus. From 2019 to 2023 (the time Ms. Hang was convicted), the gap is only 4-5 years. So it is possible that she violated the citizenship law of Cyprus.
In addition, the second article also clearly states that if this person brings disrepute to Cyprus, they still have the right to revoke their worker status in Cyprus.
Immediately after this information was shared, this tiktok channel immediately received criticism from netizens. The majority thought that the guy did not fully understand Ms. Hang's nationality, so his statement was not thorough.
Faced with the wave of controversy, this channel did not delete the clip but continued to post another video and once again affirmed that Ms. Hang was at risk of being deported because of a law that was about to take effect in Cyprus.
The channel's host continued to analyze: "After posting information about Ms. Hang, I received mixed information. So I want to explain further. In 2020, the Cyprus Nationality Law amended and supplemented Article 113, related to the revocation of nationality of those applying for citizenship in Cyprus under the investment program.
In 2020, they reformed and made it harder, more severe. Itâs not just based on whether the person has been convicted within 5 years of receiving citizenship. But the amendment makes it harder to apply to anyone who breaks the law or is sentenced to prison within 10 years. This is exactly what Hang is applying to.
This article makes a foreign conviction equivalent to a conviction in Cyprus. This leads to a conviction in Cyprus. Ms. Hang was convicted under article 331, which relates to the violation of personal rights and interests.
We have to find out if there is any equivalent law in Cyprus. If we go by article 331, there is certainly no law that is exactly equivalent in wording to what is in Cyprus.
However, they consider the nature of the case, consider the content of the verdict. In Cyprus, they have a law on defamation. Unfortunately, Ms. Hang currently has a bill to make this crime a criminal offense and is about to be included in Article 99 of the Criminal Code in Cyprus. Obviously, this is a development that could bring risks to Ms. Hang in the future, and if this becomes a reality, Ms. Hang will be in violation. The information I share is intended to educate the public about legal issues. This is a public issue that anyone can know, not intended to criticiz.e anyone. Everyone should know, including Ms. Hang, so that she can manage this legal risk."
The incident is still controversial and has not ended yet. Some people in Cyprus later spoke out against the above tiktok channel to defend Ms. Phuong Hang.
"I am a resident, have papers and I do my own paperwork in Cyprus. I work a lot with lawyers so I understand the law here. I say this to reassure Ms. Hang's fans. How can there be a case of a person causing scandals and drama that Cyprus does not allow to stay? These things are baseless. As for serving a sentence, there are many types of sentences, corruption, tax evasion, mone.y laundering, etc., that will cause the revocation of citizenship. Or they will investigate whether you provided false information when registering," said tiktoker HN, a Cypriot.
As for Ms. Phuong Hang, the female tycoon is still enjoying life. Recently, she even bragged about buying diamonds and jewelry as if nothing had happened.
