In recent days, singer Le Quyen unexpectedly became the center of public attention when an interaction on social media of hers erupted into a large-scale controversy, leading to a series of conflicting opinions about how celebrities should behave in public.
What started as a seemingly insignificant comment under a personal post quickly spread, demonstrating the significant destructive power of social media on artists' images.
On the evening of January 11th, through her verified personal page, Le Quyen spoke out about the controversy surrounding her statements. According to Le Quyen, over the years, she has been constantly attacked, slandered, and ridiculed despite doing nothing wrong.
Le Quyen maintains that she did not lose control and use foul language. "Many times, I feel a numbness in my spine, a chill in my head, and dizziness from unwarranted harsh words. I have to endure it simply because I am an artist. And if it becomes too much, I occasionally defend myself with a few words, but it's always within control. I know that after that, it will be a series of days of silence and ignoring it, because what else can I do?" the singer wrote.
While the controversy was still fresh, Ms. Hang unexpectedly spoke up, directly mentioning Le Quyen's name during an online chat. Her statements immediately sparked debate due to their harsh and direct tone. She asserted that Le Quyen is a beloved artist, but her personality is often sharp-tongued and "glib." Her exact words were: "A singer like Le Quyen is loved by many. But she's very glib. Not to mention, she's glib. Listen to her interviews, I often tell my friends, Le Quyen is very glib, very sharp-tongued. From her way of speaking to her expressions, she's very feisty, not someone to be trifled with. But maybe people didn't believe me then. But today, everyone can see it clearly."
Ms. Hang then stated that Le Quyen's response to audience comments showed a lack of tact in her behavior during a sensitive time. She questioned: "People didn't even insult her on social media, yet she treated it as if it were a harsh comment. If someone had directly called her name online, do you think she would have jumped off the stage and attacked them? Or is she now wealthy enough that she doesn't need the audience anymore, so she's resorting to violence?" She also mentioned the ticket prices for the singer's shows: "Le Quyen sells tickets for several million dong, which isn't a small amount. Le Quyen is in high demand, and I have to admit she sings very well. But regarding her character today, she's essentially slapping herself in the face. We must boycott her. She's not singing for free for us."
Notably, Ms. Hang also alluded to the past relationship between Le Quyen and Dam Vinh Hung. According to her, when the male singer was involved in a controversy, Le Quyen reportedly avoided the situation. She said: "In Dam Vinh Hung's case, Le Quyen was very clever, knowing how to avoid it. She didn't dare go or give gifts when Dam Vinh Hung invited her. She was afraid of being implicated, afraid of being boycotted. They used to be close friends, but now it's every man for himself." She added that the female singer "on one hand supports Hung, but never shows her closeness in front of everyone."
These statements were immediately shared widely. A segment of the audience felt that Ms. Hang had hit the nail on the head, especially regarding the behavior of artists in public.
As for Le Quyen, the female singer did not give a direct response regarding Ms. Hang's statement.
Ms. Phuong Hang called out Phi Thanh Van, recounting her personal life of heartbreak and excessive use of plastic surgery.
