After the uproar surrounding the pipe cart, many Vietnamese YouTubers went to China to learn more. They were surprised by local merchants when they asked to buy this item.
Recently, amid a series of controversies related to pipe intestines, including suspicions that this dish is imported from China to Vietnam for sale, many Vietnamese YouTubers went directly to the country of a billion people to find out information. In many videos shared about this process, most Chinese traders do not know what pipe intestines are, even thinking the image of the dish is a painting. In the rare stores that sell this dish, the price is many times cheaper than in Vietnam.
YouTuber Song Nhi TV posted a video recording her trip to Hekou County (Yunnan Province) to verify whether or not the intestines are actually sold in China. "I also have some Chinese friends, and when I asked them if they knew about this intestine dish, most of them didn't know," she said. According to her, the Chinese only call it "small intestine" or "rolled intestines".
After many days of searching, Song Nhi TV finally bought a bag of frozen intestines from a store specializing in importing organs. The selling price is 30 yuan/500 grams (equivalent to about 105,000 VND). "The seller said that we can import as much as we want, but only in frozen form because we cannot keep it fresh for long-distance transportation," the female YouTuber said.
A Vietnamese person who has lived in the Hekou area for many years confirmed to Song Nhi TV that this is "a genuine Chinese pipe tube, genuine goods". This person also revealed that many Vietnamese people often come here to import it for resale.
Song Nhi TV brought the offal to a roadside restaurant to have it prepared. When the dish was presented, she commented that the offal was "pinkish red" and looked like it was not fully cooked. The shape of the offal was long and slightly twisted, looking quite similar to the photo of offal from a Vietnamese car, but overall it was "not pretty" and "not very tasty".
As soon as the dish of offal was placed on the table, Song Nhi TV was hesitant. The fishy smell from the dish of offal was "unpleasant", according to her, "a fishy smell, the smell of frozen offal that had just thawed, right in her face". She even had to lean over to avoid putting her nose near the dish of offal because she couldn't stand the smell.
The taste of the intestines after tasting them was not much better. "It was fishy," she commented. To eat it, the female YouTuber had to dip a lot of sauce to cover the smell, but the "fishy, foul smell still lingered in her mouth, and she would vomit if she ate more." However, she acknowledged that the intestines were crispy, the only feature that gave the dish a few plus points.
Also looking for information about pork intestines, Vuong Linh Vlog, a Vietnamese YouTuber living in Guangxi province, visited 3 different markets in Guilin city. However, many long-time pork traders shook their heads, saying "they have never seen such intestines".
"If there is any, it's very short, and each pig only gets a little bit, sometimes it's available, sometimes it's not," said one vendor. Even switching to large-scale frozen stores has not been much better. An employee at a store specializing in frozen offal said it could be checked in the warehouse system, but "it's not available here" and "it's very rare, not many people buy it."
This person said that to get the product like in the photo of Vuong Linh Vlog, you have to order in advance from the main warehouse, but it is not certain that it is exactly the same because "I have never seen anything as white and beautifully twisted as this".
A seller with more than 10 years of experience, when shown a photo of a pipe's bottom dozens of meters long by Vuong Linh Vlog, could not hide his skepticism. "It must be a painting, the real bottom is not beautiful. For a very large sow, that section is at most 2 meters long," he said.
Another person, who has been in the offal business for more than 25 years, commented that the image "doesn't look like the real thing", claiming that the product had been "affected with some kind of chemical to create the shape". Also on the road to find out, YouTuber Vuong Khang went to markets in Guangdong province but was always met with head shakes. "In Vietnam, when you hear about offal, you think it's some kind of terrible delicacy, but in fact it's just a small intestine that has been transformed due to disease or the pig's diet," he said.
The vendors here said they had never seen this item in their many years of business. All three YouTubers above confirmed that the pipe tube is a strange concept in Chinese markets, if it exists, it is very rare and not popular.
